[(un)-SOLVED] BIOS update with wine?

Hi all,

I'd like to know if it is safe to update the BIOS via Wine. The problem is that my BIOS update does not run from DOS and I don't have any Vista partition on my HD (the BIOS update is only for Vista it seems). However, the program launch with Wine.

Thanks

EDIT: Nevermind... Wine can't reach the BIOS.

Although, if anyone has an idea as to how to upgrade a BIOS with an utility made for Vista... Please tell me.

Are you absolutely sure that the Windows program doesn't simply prepare a bootable floppy containing the updated BIOS image? Because it's far more sensible to do the update using e.g. FreeDOS.

I'm sure... It is 100% pro-Vista. I event had an (uncourteous) chat with an HP representative about that...

Re: [(un)-SOLVED] BIOS update with wine?

I used the BartPE live cd builder to create a boot disc from an old Windows XP disc. It doesn't provide a full XP environment, however, I was able to flash my BIOS on my HP laptop with it. I think you need a Windows machine to create the image, though. I used my wife's laptop, which was running Vista to create the XP disc from my old XP that nobody uses.

Thanks, I'll try that however, I really need Vista. The BIOS flash utility is made only for Vista and doesn't work even on XP (isn't that outrageous?)

Yes, newer HP laptops have that kind of Vista-only insolence mad

Ironically, HP, Dell and Acer (not sure for the later) made a public statement that they will "strongly encourage" their hardware manufacturer to provide open source drivers. This was on slashdot a few days ago.

However, I'm not sure about that, but I think it is Phoenix (BIOS) that is at fault here... Supposedly, they where  blocking OSes other than Necrosoft in the past.

Even if it would let you try it's a terrible idea. If there was even the slightest problem it could easily kill your system.

I wouldn't even think about it, not even in my wildest dreams to update my BIOS via wine, let alane Vista. I would never update my BIOS via Windows either.

Re: [(un)-SOLVED] BIOS update with wine?

I reflashed the firmware in my DVD writer via WINE the other day, without really thinking. About halfway through the process I came to my senses and spent the rest of it biting my nails and holding my breath. But it worked. (Didn't solve the problem I was having with it, mind you, but the thing still works as well as it ever did.)

I'd never try a BIOS update, though. Too risky even under "real" Windows, unless it's absolutely necessary.
