hangups with xf86-video-intel and dell + 945GM

i have had arch installed for a while now and have for the most part enjoyed it. however I can not get a stable X server/libgl running with my i945gm chipset.

here are the problems I see:

1. wonky screen when switching vdesktops and firefox/thunderbird is open (on the target virtual desktop)
    - this seems to improve if I disable DRI, and don't load GLCore, dri, glx
    - i think this might be related to noscript/java in firefox, the redrawing after I select 'Allow <site x>' in the noscript toolbar is really bad, lots of crazy lines across the browser

2. bad drawing when menus initially open and compositor is enabled
   - i don't see this as much with compositor disabled

3. hard crash of X server leaves about 0.5" garbled pixels across the top of screen, rest of screen is black.
  - mpd keeps playing
  - sometimes I can switch to vc1 and  when I can I see X is usually no longer running, but will not restart.

4. with all 3d disabled my screen 'flickers' about every 1-2minutes.

things I have tried:
- disabling stuff - dri, compositor
- rebuilding drm,mesa, intel driver

i found this arch bug report that many have found a solution by upgrading to some testing versions of xorg-server, libgl, mesa, and xf86-video-intel but that did not help me.

it seems the "Legacy3D" option no longer works with the intel driver (at least for me) even though the man page says it should work for chips "in the range i830-i945"

I've got xf86-video-intel 2.3.0-1 right now, but I've tried both the arch-stable and arch-testing versions of this driver with no luck. I'm thinking of trying the old i810 driver but iirc that driver never worked for me - or maybe i had to use 915resolution with that one.

i'm still using the stock arch-2.6.24

in zenwalk I used a git version of the intel driver that seemed stable but after I tried it on arch it was no help.

any ideas?

-ed-
Xorg.0.log everything disabled - glx and dri still load? why?
Xorg.0.log dri enabled, compositor disabled.

-ed2- finally got a screen of the firefox + garbage pixeling can be seen in lower right corner of webpage.

does anyone else get this with noscript?

Did you try these device options:

    Option "AccelMethod" "exa"
    Option "MigrationHeuristic" "greedy"

Re: hangups with xf86-video-intel and dell + 945GM

i have not tried the migrationheuristic option, but will give it ago.

im now with dri but no compositor - there is still some flakiness, like glxgears no longer works. (direct rendering is enabled)

the gears just sit there motionless but on the CLI i see the fps being spit out. whats odd to me is the FPS being reported seem about right, there is just no animation.

I tried running glxgears and I had the same issue as you! Wow! I have a Intel GM965. I was going to investigate why I have some issue when playing videos, it seems that when there's too much frames being processed it sort of flickers with a line in between frames. I did not have this issue when testing with an Ubuntu live CD.

the other problems you have I do not have though.
