Battery Life: 32bit or 64bit

Hi,

Does 64bit use more battery than 32bit?  I'm trying to create a very power conserving system; I would imagine this is a factor.

I would have thought 64bit did use more, but I've also been told that its the other way around =S

Can anyone tell me?  Also, if it does make a difference, is it substantial or what?

Assuming CPU usage is proportional to battery life, there shouldn't be a whole lot of difference between 64bit and 32bit. I guess CPU usage should be spread more effectively across multiple CPU's on a 64bit system (and therefore save some CPU time), but IMO the differences in battery usage would be negligible. You'll be able to save more battery life in other areas.

Also, if I'm not mistaken, it depends on the version of the kernel. I think that kernels prior to 2.6.24 where not having the tickless support by default for the 64 bits architecture. This would make a difference I believe -- you might want to ask your friend Google about that.
