I would like to embed an audio player in a website which can play a remote mp3 but I do not want to use Flash, or rely on the end-user's installed media player. I also need the visitor to be able to control the music (it can't simply play in the background). Is there a way to do this without Flash?

# pacman -S mplayer-plugin
For firefox, I like it
http://ispconfig.lt - ISPConfig 3 based hosting. Coming Soon!

Thanks; yeah - I have used mplayer and like it too
However, I am wondering about a way to make a website such that it can play a remotely-hosted mp3 without using flash, without running in the background, and without relying on the software running on the computer accessing the site...

Don't think that's really possible.

That won't be possible until all the popular browsers support HTML 5. For now, Flash is the most compatible option. Offer a downloadable MP3 as well, for those without Flash.

Thanks. HTML 5 looks like a big improvement; it's a shame only webkit supports that native audio playback feature so far though.
