[unstable] OpenOffice.org devel snapshots available

OpenOffice is a monster when it comes to fix compile issues and feature requests. To have a playground I've decided to maintain a package including always the latest devel snapshot. There we can test out new features, compile fixes and everything you request. Finally it will become the base to make our stable OpenOffice-base pkg one of the best tested around. And you will have it easy to report upstream bugs and watch their progress. Use http://www.openoffice.org/issues/query.cgi for upstream reports. Feel free to drop me a mail for everything you think I should follow.

http://planet.go-oo.org/ - new snapshots are always announced there including the changelog. Feel free to get their RSS feed.

We start with "build SRC680_m233". What you can see from the package version, "2.4_src680_m233-1" - the devel snapshots show you the way to OpenOffice 2.4. You can pacman -S openoffice-base-devel once your mirror will have it. Just enable the unstable repository, install the package and then disable it again to avoid conflicts when doing your daily -Syu. The x86_64 package is already up and i686 will usually follow with some delay.

It's safe to install the devel package along the stable one. You can choose from any desktop menu to open either the 2.3 stable or the devel applications. From commandline run "soffice-dev" for the fun.

I will not offer i18n packages for the devel pkg. It might happen your installed stable i18n package will make trouble together with the devel pkg. Then try removing it to see if it causes your issues.

EDIT: please backup your ~/.openoffice2 folder. The unstable pkg might change it in a way the old one cannot handle.

Go on and flood the upstream issuezilla!

SRC680_m239 uploaded for x86_64 and just uploading i686. it's known that the letter wizard is broken. already filed a bug for that.

Will you make a pkg for 3.0 branch? It would be so nice...

Re: [unstable] OpenOffice.org devel snapshots available

sure i can. i'm running a dev300_m4 build on my desktop. the OOo-devel package will always have a low priority. so don't expect every snapshot hitting the repo. also i never got any feedback. so interest in these devel package seems low.

Re: [unstable] OpenOffice.org devel snapshots available

Well, I loved those packages, and no real issue for me while I was testing them, they seemed to be pretty stable, so that I guess was the general behavior in other machines, hence why no feedback was sent.

Re: [unstable] OpenOffice.org devel snapshots available

well I for one am really looking forward to OOo 3.0. I would love devel packages in the repos or perhaps at least the upcoming beta. I am SO in need of OOXML integration in a way that acutally works and OOo3 promises to do just that, so i hope i won't have to wait until june to see if there will finally be M$ office 2007 native intergration.

Yeah, well, i also didn't give any feedback because never had a problem. I suppose we just open our mouth to say things that are wrong, not which work well...  hmm
Anyway, if you decide to upload a snapshot, many of us will be very happy   tongue

In the www.winehq.org app database, you'll find some instructions on installing Office 2007 in wine. I haven't succeeded on Arch yet, so you're mileage may vary.

Re: [unstable] OpenOffice.org devel snapshots available

First of all, thanks a lot.

Wasn't OpenOffice 3 supposed to have an appearance like Lotus Symphony? The interface seems just like OO 2 to me... anyway, it feels faster and more responsitive, plus it's good to be able to open Office 2007 docs. I haven't explored it much yet, but unfortunely it crashes (still) a lot.

Re: [unstable] OpenOffice.org devel snapshots available

I'm currently running it in another computer (my notebook, actually) with very good performance and stability. I guess there is something wrong with video config in my desktop that made it crash so frequently, because here I haven't had any (yet). I really recommend everyone giving a try on it.

Is there any chance that you include the nice keynote-like Impress transitons in your package?

Re: [unstable] OpenOffice.org devel snapshots available

I brought a couple of MS 2007 documents to this machine, a xlsx and a docx file. They both opened perfectly with the 3.0_dev300_m10-1 build! They weren't real complex documents, but there were no issues. Once again AndyRTR, this is awesome work. Thanks a lot for doing this.

Re: [unstable] OpenOffice.org devel snapshots available

Thanks for the openoffice-base-devel package. I always like to see where my favorite apps are heading, and this looks like a safe way to test out OO.o 3.

One question: where is the bug database for this package? Is it maintained by Arch people, or by OpenOffice people?

I'm having a little problem with the drop-down menus, and before I file a bug, I thought I'd browse the known issues.

Thanks again.

Re: [unstable] OpenOffice.org devel snapshots available

for packaging issues use our own flyspray tracker, for upstream issues check http://www.openoffice.org/issues/query.cgi

FYI: i can't update OOo right now. It doesn't build anymore with gcc-gcj. Using SUN jdk works but breaks compatibility for gcj runtime.

Re: [unstable] OpenOffice.org devel snapshots available

i'm curious how this will work when OOo 3.0 becomes final
i have both the 'devel' and the stable installed
i assume the devel will become stable, right?
so my stable will be overwritten with the newest, and i'll still have the devel, which will in turn no longer exist?

The English dictionary is supposed to be a file or a folder by the name of dict-en.oxt that's in /opt/<openoffice_beta_dir>/share/extension/install/ where <openoffice_beta_dir> is openoffice-beta on Arch. It's not there and it's not on the OpenOffice extensions page. There are some dictionaries there though. Some of you will be able to get spell check going easily. Tools-->Language-->More dictionaries on-line

--EDIT--

dict-en.oxt is a zip file. I pulled it from the official binary and copied it to /opt/openoffice-beta/share/extension/install/ (which may have been overkill). I still needed to go to the extension manager to install it.

It doesn't work. It thinks that every word is misspelled. I think I saw the solution to that problem. More instructions later...

--EDIT--

It turns out that the English version of OOb3 had every English dictionary that wasn't for the US. I pulled all of the files for the US stuff out of /opt/openoffice/share/dict/ooo (which is still from the openoffice-spell-en package) and copied them into the folder:

/home/skottish/.openoffice.org3/user/uno_packages/cache/uno_packages/bp7fcp_/dict-en.oxt

which was created by the extension manager. Now spell check works.

The was F**KING intuitive!!!!

--EDIT--

The file structure in the home directory changed with Beta 3. Just look for ~/.openoffice.org and follow the tree.
