I'm having an issue with thunar and gtk icons w/ awesome wm [SOLVED]

I installed awesome (in virtualbox) and I set it up with thunar as a file manager and i can't seem to get it to accept my icons. I have this in my gtkrc.mine file.

gtk-icon-theme-name = "Tango"

The X server tells me that thunar can't find the icon called "gnome-mime-application-octet-stream" and that the hicolor theme can't be found.

any ideas? I was able to get this to work on my last awesome/thunar adventure...

EDIT: I installed the gtk-rezlooks and gtk-chtheme package and changed the theme and thunar (and swiftfox) are ok now. weird..
