Intel 3945 wireless problem

Hi.

I have a laptop with Intel 3945 card. I was using ipw3945 driver and ipw3945d daemon, and that was working properly.
Today I have updated to 2.6.24 kernel from [testing], which removed ipw3945 and iwlwifi packages - now it includes iwl3945 driver.
But this driver doesn't work properly - I am unable to configure my system to connect to wireless network secured by WEP and with hidden ESSID.
The same network configuration (in /etc/network-profiles, and I'm using menu to select network profile during boot) that worked before doesn't work anymore - I have changed eth1 to wlan0,
but now it just timeouts while trying to connect to the network.
When I try to connect manually, it doesn't work either - iwconfig shows that my card is not associated with access point.
If I try to run dhcpcd or dhclient, they both fail due to timeout. But when I run 'iwlist scan', and after that dhcpcd or dhclient, everything starts working properly - iwconfig shows that I'm associated,
and both dhcpcd and dhclient work.

Also, my wireless LED, that used to blink when trying to connect to AP, and that was on when I was connected, now doesn't show up at all, even if I connect to the network
after iwlist scan.

Also, as a side note - new Arch logo in 2.6.24 looks really really ugly - it is just a white shape....

the led part is just not implemented in the driver yet. known bug, lots of people (me included) are waiting for it, we'll just have to wait or include a patch...

i've been using iwl with wpa2 for quite some time now and it works pretty fine for me. all that is changed with 2.6.24 regarding wlan was that i removed the iwlwifi package, the rest stayed (visibly) the same. i'm happy. see: :-)

Re: Intel 3945 wireless problem

I haven't installed 2.6.24. What you are saying is that iwlwifi is no longer needed? iwl3945 comes with the kernel sources?

I haven't had any problem at all using iwl3945... I have been using wep (broadcast), wpa, wpa2 hidden, wpa2 broadcasted, tkip, and such... Never had any problem since 1.20...

tanis, try connecting to that network with wpa_supplicant...

Re: Intel 3945 wireless problem

I can recommend using the new netcfg2-tool. Look for in the wiki and the recent announcements on this forum.

It's working with iwl3945 for me, but have not tested it with the .24-kernel...

Zl.

Re: Intel 3945 wireless problem

smile Amazing but I started to think that my computer selects routers smile I have a US Robotics 9106 at home and I can't connect to it no matter what I do.. (I can do it in Vista) At work, we have some modem and I can connect to it without any problems.. The only difference is one uses WPA (home), and the other uses WEP..

Can you try and see if you experience the same problem? Boot without starting wireless network and just try to configure it manually
with iwconfig, and dhcpcd? Because if it does netcfg2 can't help here.

Re: Intel 3945 wireless problem

I decided to try iwlwifi and I have the exact same problem as tanis. I couldn't find a solution, so for now I went back to ipw3945 which works fine. If I have time for further testing and find out something useful I'll post back.

Re: Intel 3945 wireless problem

Bogart: What kind of hardware do you have? Maybe it is platform related?
I have Asus G1 laptop. And the vendor:product id of the card is: 8086:4222 - Intel 3945ABG.

Ok, and I get disconnected and have to reconnect every time my laptop looses network signal for a few seconds (happens from time to time due to long distance to AP) - I'm going back to ipw3945 hmm

Re: Intel 3945 wireless problem

I also have problems. Network MAnager is the worst thing ever made. The thing is that wicd won't work for me.

It can be frustrating. Today I spent 2 hours trying to connect to my college's network (PEAP + TKIP)

Netcfg2 is all you need.

It's a HP Compaq with an Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG (802.11a/b/g) card. I still didn't have time to look at it closer, but it had the same symptoms. It would only work after "iwlist scan". I have to investigate why it doesn't get the correct IP without scanning first.

Re: Intel 3945 wireless problem

My laptop dual boots Gentoo and Arch, on Gentoo I have the iwlwifi drivers working fine, however with Arch they dont seem to work, so I still run ipw3945 on Arch.

Could be the fact that my Arch install runs stock kernel26 kernel, and my Gentoo is self compiled.

If ipw3945 gets phased out and iwlwifi dosent work, I may just self compile my kernel.

iwlwifi was still in development last time I checked, so I dont think it should be phased from the mirrors just yet.

Re: Intel 3945 wireless problem

I have tried netcfg2 but it doesn't help. On the other hand, I don't see how could it change anything, it's just a set of scripts...

Crooksey - you can still use ipw3945, just install it again when it gets removed by the kernel upgrade.

Re: Intel 3945 wireless problem

I experienced this as well. I tried the ipw3945 driver, could associate and sniff with kismet but I could not get an address from DHCP. I then tried the iwl3945 driver, it works, I did an iwlist scanning and it was able to get an IP from DHCP. I haven't tried using ipw3945 and doing an iwlist scan, I will try and report back.

Re: Intel 3945 wireless problem

I HAVE A SOLUTION! I had the same problem, it is a kernel bug affecting all linux distros. Create a file, /etc/modprobe.d/iwl3945 and put this is it:

alias wlan0 iwl3945
options iwl3945 disable_hw_scan=1 hwcrypto=1

tell me if it works!
