Alsa dmixer not working

Installed alsa-utils alsa-libs alsa-oss

when I open any program that uses sound continually (VLC or MPlayer for example) I can't hear sound in any other program.

output tells me that "the device is busy"

I tried following the wiki suggestion for dmixer but it did absolutely zilch, but it even says dmix should work automatically now.

This is a nvidia nforce onboard sound(realtek)AC97 with intel8x0 module loaded

Note: Why do i have to use "command" in pidgin in conjunction with the aplay command to get sound to work in it, I don't remember even having to do that on gentoo, there a logical reason why it doesn't accept ALSA for Arch?
