I was using gnome and metacity as the windows manager, but I decided to switch to xfce instead.
However metacity is still loading by default, instead of xfwm4, anyone can show me how I can fix that?

I have the flag set to allow xfce to manage my desktop, and it does, but its using the wrong windows manager.
I'm not sure where to change the preferred windows manager, in what settings?
I can't run the Window Manager settings, because it look for xfwm4 running, it it won't start without it, so there must be some where in the configuration files where I can change this.

Try this in a terminal or run dialog
xfwm4 --replace &

xfwm4 doesn't have --replace as one of the options.
I know I can kill metacity and run xfwm4 instead but that's not the solution I'm looking for. I would like to know how is metacity started by default and be able to change that to xfwm4 instead.

When I played around with xfce I didn't change my wm, but that's how most of the ones I tried worked. Oh well, it was worth a shot.
Try deleting your .gnome* folders, it may have some setting that override xfce's for some reason. You could also do the kill metacity, start xfwm commands and then save your session.
