Re: Monitor is not switching ON

If you are getting a blank screen that usually means your horizontal and/or vertical refresh rates are not set correctly for your monitor. But typically these days there is no need to set the refresh rates because, X will determine the correct refresh rates.

How did you create your xorg.conf.new file?

Did you run X -confg /root/xorg.conf.new to test the xorg.config.new file? I am not sure how typing the command you mentioned above would attempt to start the X server.

Re: Monitor is not switching ON

Only thing I can think of is for you to post the information about your monitor, video card and post your current xorg file?

Re: Monitor is not switching ON

Are you sure it's connected?
Mine goes to power save if it's not plugged in.

Re: Monitor is not switching ON

Try holding down ctl+alt and tapping the plus or minus key, I buggered up my xorg.conf file and was getting a similar problem. It seems to change the resolution, I managed to get the monitor working and thus could see and make some changes to xorg.
Just a stab in the dark maybe but it worked for me.

Re: Monitor is not switching ON

I understand that your Arch boots and starts "broken" X automatically, which then leaves you with an unusable system. Is that right?

If you start X through inittab and use GRUB, add "3" to the kernel line.

If you start X by starting kdm/gdm daemon, you might try adding "init=/bin/sh" or "1" to kernel line in GRUB or booting from some livecd and disabling the daemon it in /etc/rc.conf.

That way you'll get into Arch without X and will be able to tinker with xorg.conf.

Re: Monitor is not switching ON

But you reach GRUB, don't you? You can edit GRUB interactively.

When does your monitor power down, exactly?

Re: Monitor is not switching ON

I know that there was a bad nvidia package a little while ago. Have you done a full pacman -Syu lately?

When you get the grub screen, try pressing "e" instead of "enter" (or letting it proceed automatically). Press "e" again on the line that starts with "kernel" and add "1" to the end. After that, you can press "b" to boot from the updated entry.

This will put you into single user mode -- X should be disabled. At that point, you should be able to edit (or recreate) the xorg.conf file and/or do the full pacman -Syu.

When you reboot, the grub configuration will be restored.

Ah... It's the word "single" instead of the number "1" .. oops!

Try that and let us know...

Re: Monitor is not switching ON

Try booting with a livecd and then run this command:

(after mounting your main drive to /mnt/recover)
chroot /mnt/recover /bin/bash

After that, run a pacman -Syu to (theoretically) update everything. Finally, reboot and everything should be updated. If it still doesn't work, back up your /etc and /home directories and reinstall.. Perhaps you really messed something up in your original installation.

By the way, about how old is this installation?
