Forgive me if this has already been covered in the forum or Wiki (did check / didn't find it) and please understand that I am brand new to Archlinux. My cdrom will read / open data cds but will not play or even recognize audio cd f/s. Common codecs are installed and I am using xmms.
Using 2007.08-2. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Are you in the optical group?
I think it's the most common error concerning audio CD's.

Also, if you can give more precision it could help. I'm not using XMMS and I never did, but is there an error message? If no, there's surely a verbose option or something like that.

Hi vomix,
Thanks for your reply. Xmms gives no error message -- it just doesn't read the audio disk. However, if I try to mount the cdrom with an audio cd inserted via
/media/cdrom I get this: "Mounting /media/cdrom
mount: I could not determine the filesystem type, and none was specified
Mount failed
Done
There was one error."
I can access any data cd but cannot read, access or play any audio cd. I was thinking along the lines of missing or corrupted codecs (??) but can't determine.
fstab entry
/dev/cdrom /media/cdrom auto ro,user,noauto,unhide 0 0
By the way, I'm using fluxbox 1.0.0 and am in audio and optical group. I'll reread the wiki on groups. Thanks.

Audio CDs can't be mounted...
Haven't been here in a while. Still rocking Arch.

As Sigi said, audio CDs can't and didn't have to be mounted to be read.
Some ideas:
- Check you mixer settings (eg: alsamixer) and see if the CD output isn't muted,
- Verify the cable connection between your cd drive & your motherboard / soundcard,
- See this post,
- And if it's not working, you could try cdcd, a nice CLI application to read audio CDs. It may be useful to know if your cd drive is defective, or if it's just an XMMS issue (or you can also try mplayer cdda://).
I hope it'll help.

I have tried mplayer cdda:// - this will play my audio cd, but brokenly.
KsCD or Amarok will not recognize audio cd.
