bizarre kde/gnome hybrid desktop?

.......as I removed OpenOffice due to its undesireable behavior: Gnome icons appeared on my kde desktop and refuse to go away!

Now, this did resolve my non kde app small menu font problem, but it just doesn't sound healthy......

Does anyone have a clue what could have happend here?  Is this normal, or at least less strange than it seems to me?

I've rebooted since the occurence and still get the kde/gnome
hybrid desktop......

Help?

I think OOo has icon sets for both gnome and kde that get installed. look in your ~/ directory for any .<someOOo>/ directory. (i cannot remember what the names of these directories are)

when you install OOo then set up your user account it creates a fw user directories.

Re: bizarre kde/gnome hybrid desktop?

I've waded through every directory file i can find and can find nothing about OOo.  Just so I'm clear, the icons are not OOo, they are the gnome desktop icons. computer,home, trash, etc.  and they access
gnome control panels and applications.  Some of my app toolbars and themes are also gnome-style.  My kde transparent menu background has been replaced by gnome background and font and still has the kde runner at the side......eeek!

Re: bizarre kde/gnome hybrid desktop?

If you kill Nautilus your kde desktop should reapear. For some
reason nautilus seems to be linked to the gnome desktop. I had
this problem when I ran Debian. At least Nautalis was the culpret
when that happened to me.

As far as small fonts in non kde apps,  you could edit or create
a .gtkrc and a .gtkrc-2.0 file specifying fonts. and put them in your
root or home/usraccount dirctories. here's the two files I created
that solved small font problems with non kde apps while running
kde. I added the tool tip sections to tooltips with non kde apps so
the colors would match kde app tooltips with a dark theme. You
may need to play around with the font size values in the two files
depending on how blind you are wink

.gtkrc

style  "gtk-default-iso-8859-2" {
       fontset = "-*-helvetica-medium-r-normal--15-*-*-*-*-*-iso8859-1,
                  -*-arial-medium-r-normal--15-*-*-*-*-*-iso8859-1,
          -*-helvetica-medium-r-normal--15-*-*-*-*-*-iso8859-2,
          -*-arial-medium-r-normal--15-*-*-*-*-*-iso8859-2,*-r-*"
}

style "tooltips"
{
bg[NORMAL] = "#ffffcc"
fg[NORMAL] = "#000000"
}

widget "gtk-tooltips*"style "tooltips"

class "GtkWidget" style "gtk-default-iso-8859-2"

.gtkrc-2.0

gtk-font-name = "Sans 15"

style "tooltips"
{
bg[NORMAL] = "#ffffcc"
fg[NORMAL] = "#000000"
}

widget "gtk-tooltips*"style "tooltips"

Re: bizarre kde/gnome hybrid desktop?

Many thanks indeed!
Nautilus was indeed the culprit, I thought i was on crack for a moment.
Dueling desktops is definitely no fun.

...and thanx for the font config advice, when I get home this afternoon that'll be the first thing i try!  Guess I'm blinder than i thought!

All is back to normal for now.

Thanx to all

Re: bizarre kde/gnome hybrid desktop?

You're welcome. I remeber when that happened to me and thought
I did somthing stupid to make my system freak, which I have a habit
of doing somtimes. The font solution works, but I don't know
if creating those files would effect Gnome if you use Gnome at all. I
don't care for Gnome and don't have it installed. Hope it works for
you.

Re: bizarre kde/gnome hybrid desktop?

Hey Leigh,

Just tried the font files that you were kind enough to post.
Yay!  Wow, hard to thank you enough for that!  I've
had a  headache for a week trying to put that fire out.
That frees me up to get on with building my system.
I'm a recent WinXP convert and I'm determined to make this
work.  Didn't know these forums would be of so much
help.  VERY pleasant surprise!

BTW I suppose I'm no blinder than you, your settings work
perfectly!

Thanx again!

Re: bizarre kde/gnome hybrid desktop?

I'm happy the files worked for you and welcome to Linux smile I don't
think you will ever regret leaving microsoft. Linux just takes
alittle patience and if your willing to learn a few things, it blows
microsoft out of the water. Thats just my opinion though smile
