Weird crash

I'm having some very very weird problems. What happens is that I'm sitting in front of my computer and suddenly the screen goes blank and says "Out of range" (as if it doesn't receive a signal from the graphics card). At this point the keyboard stops working as well, but the computer is still running since music is still playing and it responds to ping. However I cannot ssh in anymore, but remaining sessions keep on running. I can see no real pattern in when it happens, it seems to be random. I've tried looking in /var/log to find any information, but without any success. I'm not sure what information is needed for this, the system is up to date, it's the i686 version and here are some info:

I'm running the catalyst drivers. I'm not 100% sure when it started to become this way, the odd thing is that the computer is stable in windows. No crashes or anything and memtest runs without any problems. It's not an heat issue since my temperatures are < 40 degrees C. I'm sorry for the lack of information, but simple since I don't know what information is useful ...

The computer was stable before and I'm not sure when it started behaving this way.

Edit: Got the tip on irc to use noacpi as a boot flag in grub, however this doesn't solve the problem.

Re: Weird crash

I would first change the driver to an alternate one, and work for a while to see if that is the cause.

I've tried using vesa for a while now, and it doesn't crash now. However it's impossible to play videos and that sort of stuff with vesa .... it simply doesn't work as well as it should. So, should I maybe try using testing repo the get a later catalyst driver to see if it solves the problem?

Re: Weird crash

I think it is solved now. But I'm not 100% sure, I haven't experienced any lock ups in a while now. What I've done is that I've changed the fglrx driver to the radeonhd driver, since I do not need 3D Support this is suffice for me. So I did this:

In rc.conf I put !fglrx in the modules part and now my xorg.conf is edited to this:

Section "ServerLayout"
    Identifier "Simple Layout"
    Screen 0 "aticonfig-Screen[0]" 0 0
    InputDevice "Mouse0" "CorePointer"
    InputDevice "Keyboard0" "CoreKeyboard"
EndSection

Section "Files"
    RgbPath "/usr/share/X11/rgb"
    ModulePath "/usr/lib/xorg/modules"
    FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/misc:unscaled"
    FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/misc"
    FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/75dpi:unscaled"
    FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/75dpi"
    FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/100dpi:unscaled"
    FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/100dpi"
    FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/Type1"
EndSection

Section "Module"
Load "dbe" # Double buffer extension
    Load "dri"
    Load "record"
    Load "glx"
    Load "xtrap"
    Load "extmod"
    Load "freetype"
    Load "i2c"

    SubSection "extmod"
Option "omit xfree86-dga" # don't initialise the DGA extension
    EndSubSection
    Load "freetype"
EndSection

Section "InputDevice"
    Identifier "Keyboard0"
    Driver "kbd"
    Option "XkbRules" "xorg"
    Option "XkbModel" "pc105"
    Option "XkbLayout" "se"
EndSection

Section "InputDevice"
  Identifier "Mouse0"
  Driver "mouse"
  Option "Protocol" "ExplorerPS/2"
  Option "Buttons" "7"
  Option "ZAXisMapping" "4 5"
  Option "ButtonMaapping" "1 2 3 6 7"
  Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
    Identifier "aticonfig-Monitor[0]"
EndSection

Section "Device"
    Identifier "aticonfig-Device[0]"
    Option "XAANoOffscreenPixmaps"
    Driver "radeonhd"
        Option "XAANoOffscreenPixmaps" "true"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
    Identifier "aticonfig-Screen[0]"
    Device "aticonfig-Device[0]"
    Monitor "aticonfig-Monitor[0]"
    DefaultDepth 24
    SubSection "Display"
        Viewport 0 0
        Depth 24
    EndSubSection
EndSection

And now everything seems to work. The config is kinda chubby, but it seems to work.

OK. Everything *seemed* to work, now X just shuts down randomly but not the whole computer:

Edit: I feel stupid, but I had old drivers + catalyst-utils left ... that's what made X crash. Hopefully now it will be stable ...
