Archlinux and P35 Chipset. [ABIT FULL OF FAIL?]

Hello, my latest build for my comp includes an Abit I-P35E. I have heard of P35 motherboards and linux not getting along very nice. Some of my friends have motherboards from Gigabyte with the P35 chipset and they are running Archlinux no problem. I on the other hand cannnot get ArchLinux running without modifying too many things. Here's what happens:

I have 3 SATA hdd. If I run 2 hdds in the upper most sata ports (5 and 6) then ArchLinux and Ubuntu will not have problems finding my hard drives. If I run them in ports 1 and 2 I do get errors. If I run 3 hdds, in ports 2,5,6 then I still get errors. The IRQPOLL fix does not work.

Sabayon is always praised to be the most up to date technology wise distro. I tried sabayon and to my suprise it actually works with all 3 hdds. It's a tad bit bloated, and I would rather use arch.

So I am wondering if anyone has had similar problems and if they did, how they fixed them. I am also wondering if the newest release of arch gets rid of this problem. The newest ubuntu 8.0.4 doesn't, and I don't expect arch to either. Right now I'm using sabayon.

Check the kernel version/configuration that sabayon is using. Also check for any relevant patches they might be applying.

Maybe arch's kernel in testing (2.6.25) has had driver improvements over the one in core (2.6.24)?

I had a Abit IP35-Pro and it worked flawlessly under Linux (I got it in September 2007). I was running two HDDs in SATA ports 1 and 2.
I think your problems are more related to the special configuration of your moterboard.

Sorry I don't bring much help sad !

Only thing I did with it, was set the FSB to like 450 to get an overclock of 3.6ghz on my e6750, and my ram to 900mhz. Also changed timings to 4-4-4-12. That shouldn't really affect the hdd controller though. I'll check out the beta though, and chech which kernal version/config sabayon is using. I really much rather use arch.

I have an Abit IP35-E with two ide hdds two sata hdds and a sata dvd writer and it works well.
I had some cold boots problems (only happening after rebooting in linux, not in windows) but fixed with bios 16.

off-topic: i am just thinking about switching to a gigabyte p-35-board with an e6750. which kind of ram do you use? which boards do your friends use exactly? i am not quite sure about which model exactly i should buy.

on-topic: in the sabayon-forum (or here) send a mail to wolfden, he is a sab-dev and also arch-user. perhaps he has some information about this.

Do you have a benchmark for Linux ?

Because I noticed that Linux needs much more stability than Windows. A system stable under Windows while playing video games heavily could be crashing under Linux !

Re: Archlinux and P35 Chipset. [ABIT FULL OF FAIL?]

Absolutely not. I verified this many times. Apparently it's related on how Linux handles memory. But of course, with a 100% stable overclocking, there is no problem. Linux is just a bit more picky.
