at the very firts time when 'pacman --sync' is issued
pacman complains that cache dir doesn't exist in /var/cache/pacman
it would be configured by default for a newbie like me
[root@pacman root]# pacman --sync xautolock
Targets: xautolock-2.1-1
Do you want to install/upgrade these packages? [Y/n]

ok try running:
pacman -Syu
let me know how it goes.
Offline
i issued the command as like "pacman -Syu"
several packages have been updated including pacman itself
no problem cuz i did it after i made the cache folder on which pacman complained
after pacman updated, i gave a try to remove cache dir of pacman, which i made of and reran the pacman
pacman complained again.. trying to store the downloaded pkg into /tmp
after all pkg was installed, there was nothing in /tmp
ok try running:
pacman -Syu
let me know how it goes.
dont remove the cache dir then?
Offline
ok! pacman works as expected
dont remove the cache dir then?
The /var/cache portion of the path must already exist, which means the filesystem package must be installed. From there, pacman should automatically create /var/cache/pacman/pkg if it does not already exist.

you're right. pacman trys to create "pkg" dir in /var/cache/pacman if it isn't there
but pacman fails to do
see my log above, the first thread

It could fail for two common reasons: a) it was on a read-only filesystem; or b) /var/cache didn't exist beforehand.
