Open a terminal
Type "alsamixer"
Use the arrow keys to select the appropriate channel, you'll need to look at "Master" and "PCM"
Use the up and down keys to change the volume, and m to toggle mute
Press esc to exit.
For more information, type "man alsamixer" into a terminal. If you don't like using alsamixer, you may find there is an alternate volume control built into your desktop (gnome/kde).
You can save alsa settings using "alsactl store" and get them back with "alsactl restore", or this can be done automatically at startup/shutdown by the alsa daemon.

First off, welcome to Arch
Secondly, please avoid double posting, you don't need to open the same thread in different sections of the forum. Just pick one and stick to it. If you don't get replies after a while, you can always bump the thread. I have deleted the other one, as this seems the one people tend to look at more.
Thirdly, have a look at the Beginners Guide for any reference, there is the chance that you missed out some bits if you haven't read that.
Make sure you go through it carefully, and good luck

OK, If you can't turn up the volume in alsamixer, there must be a problem elsewhere. There is another common problem (documented in the wiki); are you a member of the audio group? To check, run "groups" at console, it will list what groups you are in. If "audio" is not listed, look in the wiki page finferflu linked for a solution.
If this doesn't work, try to locate the problem a bit better. Try running the command:
aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav
as a normal user, and if that doesn't work, as root. You should hear the words "front, center". Make a note of any errors that appear in the terminal and post them here.

well i am member of audio group.............and about the command u said.......i logged in as root and executed the command it didnt show any errors and displayed this message:
Playing WAVE '/usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav' : Signed 16 bit Little Endian, Rate 48000 Hz, Mono

OK... I'm stumped. Alsa seems to think it's all fine, and that it's playing. I guess you've already checked that the speakers work & are plugged in etc. Anyone else have ideas?

The only thing I can think of is wrong drivers. Try to run, as root:
alsaconf
And reconfigure your alsa to work with your sound card.

Ya, check the drivers. Which drivers are you using and what is the output of lspci?

Hey, I have the same problem. The file plays, just no sound. I put the speaker up to my ear and I can faintly hear the file I am playing. I used alsaconf and it said everything is fine. I used alsamixer and unmuted and set volume to max on everything.
I am using the onboard audio chipset on my mobo, is that a problem? It is an ati chipset... do I need to install another set of ati drivers? I already downloaded the open source ati drivers but I cannot switch to ati from vesa.
Here is my audio device:

Azalia cards are snd-hda-intel. make sure it is in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf
The faint sounds may be sounds that 'escape' through the mute (in electronics even a short circuit has resistance)
In KDE run kmix and unmute everything there too
Make sure the volume keys on the keyboard are not in mute
Or maybe computer plays ok but there is bad contact somewhere or the speakers are plugged in the wrong hole
If you have surround card make sure the speakers are plugged in the front (light green) hole - other holes may require special settings to be enabled

Oh man, how embarrasing... my speaker was plugged into wrong port.
Thanks 1101. The light blue port looked like the green one.
