mplayer doesn't seem to want to play anything...

Whenever I try to run mplayer, I get the following error:

I am running fluxbox with a gig of memory - any ideas what could cause this?

Edit: also running xorg and using an ATI 9800 video card, although I've had mplayer running on this before...
