I am running Arch, with ATI Technologies Inc 3D Rage Pro AGP 1X/2X (rev 5c) video card. Not using LCD. Used both xfree86 and now xorg and had no trouble getting vmware in full screen mode. I've had some issues getting control of the cursor after getting OUT of full-screen mode, but other than that, it seems to work just fine.
I know my video card is different to the one you mention, so this post is probably not very helpful to you.

I have now changed the radeon to nvidia riva and a g-forcefx 5700
and the both nvidia cards works well without any problem, nvidia works
with the drivers installed or not, under suse 9.0 and suse 9.1 works the
radeon card also perfectly, i would go to seek for the failure why with
arch not, or simply go to nvidia cards.
