user can't start x [solved]

I had a disk error on my machine and had to reinstall arch, including xorg and KDE.  Now I can't get Xorg to start from a normal user.  root can start x, but when I try as a normal user, I get a flash of the mouse cursor on the black screen, the monitor clicks, and I get kicked back to the command line.

The only error in the Xorg log is that it can't load module Type1.  A few font warnings, and an ACPI (APCI??? I can't keep them straight) warning.

It sounds like a permissions problem but I'm not finding information on where to look for that problem.

Could you paste your Xorg log?

Re: user can't start x [solved]

Could you give the output of "stat /usr/bin/Xorg"?

Re: user can't start x [solved]

You know, these are trivial requests when I have X running, but for the life of me I don't know how to do it from the command line.  I'm posting from the Windows version of my machine (dual boot) right now, and don't know if I can access it from here, either.

Getting the output isn't a problem.  Posting is what I don't know how to do.  sad

[bump]

I found a program from diskinternals called Linux Reader that allows me to transfer from my ext3 to windows.  So, the output from stat /usr/bin/Xorg is:

  File: `/usr/bin/Xorg'

Re: user can't start x [solved]

More than likely you don't have anything in .xinitrc.

Re: user can't start x [solved]

@Factory

I think you are right. First i thought about a permission problem but after your post i think that he does not
have any .xinitrc. But why he has desktop with root (twm ?), did he start the xserver with root after install
to test it. :-)
I like to see what was the problem.

Re: user can't start x [solved]

I had this problem too. I found that having a display manager load on startup allowed any user to log on, despite them not being able to "startx". For example, install gdm, add gdm to the daemons line in /etc/rc.conf and reboot.

I have since found a fix for this problem by changing the permissions on the /tmp folder with the following commands as root.

chmod 1777 /tmp
chmod +t /tmp

Re: user can't start x [solved]

Ok, I have an .xinitrc, but hadn't uncommented any startup option.  I think once upon a time there was a default, but not any more.  I uncomment the KDE line, and into X I go.

I did start it up as root only to check it out.  Why would root start up X without problem?

root probably used /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc, because it has no ~/.xinitrc.
