Hello, I am brand new to Archlinux, though I have messed around with a few distros before.
I am building up a new install and am stuck at the update, sync and upgrade the system with pacman section of the beginners guide.
I can ping so I should have a network connection.
However, when I issue the -Syy command it times out and gives an "unexpected system error" message.
I have tried several different mirror sites but get the same result.
I have also tried amending /etc/pacman.conf simply to see if it makes any difference. Removing the # from the XferCommand line brings up more detail on the connection, indicating that the system logs on to the mirror site but still the data connection times out.
I have searched the forums and the Wiki but not come up with an answer to this problem. I assume that I have made some simple error somewhere but as a beginner I have no idea where, so any help would be appreciated.

What ISO image did you use to create the cd? I remember I had a hard time using pacman due to it being an older version. Though I got "Transient Resolver" errors and not timeouts.
Using the "official" isos, I have had problems:

I used the 2008.03 isos but they have newer ones released:

I did use the official isos as I assumed they would be good.
Could you point me in the direction of a clean one?
Thanks

go here...these .iso's should work just fine.

you'll probably wanna grab the 2008 core install

That site seems to require a registration?
If you don't want to register, here are the latest "official" isos (Provided you're running i686!)

the registration takes, literally, 10 seconds...doesn't even send an email confirmation. it's mainly for tracking stats like upload/download ratios...things like that.

Re-downloading and installing is probably not necessary. If you haven't already done that, can you give the exact version number of the iso you used. Also, post the complete pacman output rather that just the error message. It gives us more of an idea what happened.

The issue I believe is with using an old version of pacman, you may try to salvage your installation by using this command as recommended by Allan in this thread:
http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=49078
pacman -U http://ftp.archlinux.org/core/os/i686/{pacman-3.1.4-1,libdownload-1.3-1,libarchive-2.4.17-1}-i686.pkg.tar.gz

Thanks for the tips. I shall try the pacman fix and if that doesn't work I'll re-download Arch.
Not sure when I'll be able to give it a go but heres hoping
Thanks
