cant play mkv files

I have vlc and totem player also i have the latest codecs installed but still not able to play .mkv files .. pl can any one help...
Also is there any player in linux like GOM which remembers till where we had played last time & also allows us to configure how much seconds to skip when v press the respective buttons?..

What encoding does the video/audio have.  You can see this in vlc with an option in the menu (can remember what it is called but it was fairly obvious).

i didn understand exactly what u meant .... but i checked audio & video codecs ...
audio codecs -A/52 & vorbis
video codecs-Theora, x264,fake
Is this what u asked for ?
