Compiz-fusion and Gnome "The Right Way"

Hey All,
I'm sorry if something like this has been posted before but my googling proved fruitless and I was unable to find something here. (could just be me though tongue )

Anyway:
I am running Gnome and GDM and would like a way to start compiz fusion on startup without having to use fusion-icon as starting metacity, killing it and then starting compiz-fusion seems a very dirty way of going about things.
I've tried several different methods but to no avail.

I was wondering if anybody who has figured this out could help.

many thanks
C

Just modify the session using the proper GNOME control panel. You'll just need to ensure that fusion-icon is started and then select compiz as the window manager. This should only need to be done once.

Re: Compiz-fusion and Gnome "The Right Way"

That's not what I was trying to do - I know I can start compiz-fusion with the fusion-icon on starting Gnome.
I was trying to find out if there is a way to start compiz on starting Gnome WITHOUT having to use the fusion-icon in startup programs option as this would have to go through the start metacity/kill metacity/start compiz rigmarole which I feel is unnecessary (I managed to get compiz to start by default - no metacity or fusion-icon - using SLIM as my login manager). Also, it appears I can't start both compiz and avant-dock simultaneously (avant crashes) and it plays merry hell with my Screenlets (they look pixelated).

I looked in the Arch wiki but the bit I was interested in says TO DO (the 'Autostart without Compiz Fusion')

Sorry if I didn't make my query clear enough

many thanks

Re: Compiz-fusion and Gnome "The Right Way"

If you first remove metacity from the session task list you won't have this problem.

Thanks - but how do you do that? I can't find it in the startup programs and googling around for config files has not really given me anything

thanks

Re: Compiz-fusion and Gnome "The Right Way"

Start metacity and such then when you have metacity running, open the session control preferences, select metacity, drop down the dropdown, select 'normal', apply, remove [metacity], apply. Then head over to the session saver and hit the "save settings" button.

Windows was made for looking at success from a distance through a wall of oversimplicity. Linux removes the wall, so you can just walk up to success and make it your own.
