Something to play Real Audio files? (.ra)

I sometimes see Real Audio files on websites, on Windows, they have RealPlayer that will play them.  Is there a similar app on linux/Arch.  I'm mostly interested in Audio (*.ra), though I am also curious about the video files (*.ram).

I'm hoping to find a plug-in for mozilla-firefox, or link in an outside app.

I've been searching through the package database, but didnt see anything.

thx

Check out the mplayer-plugin package.

mplayer with a plugin works best, as far as I can tell. helixplayer will only work if you can access OSS in a decent way.
I have to use real(r) software a lot for my work, all programs from the helixcommunity work except for the player on my little workstation loaded with arch.
The producer (real10) is used every day and since I've loaded it on the encoders they are fast as hell (dual p3).
alas the website is dutch only but you can listen to the hellixcommunity powerd webradio here: http://3voor12.vpro.nl/webradio

apt-get install arch

No problem.  I'm running Realplayer8 plugin on Firefox right now.  I enjoy all Real streaming content over the internet.  It works perfectly for Real content plugin requests as well.

1. Get the Realplayer8 for Linux from the following Real website:

http://forms.real.com/real/player/unix/unix.html

* Fill out the brief form (use "Linux 2.x (libc6 i386)" for "Select OS", for a standard x86/AL setup), and click "Download User Supported Player".  The name of the file should be `rp8_linux20_libc6_i386_cs2.bin'.

2. Change file permissions to user executable and exec the file.

chmod u+x rp8_linux20_libc6_i386_cs2.bin
./rp8_linux20_libc6_i386_cs2.bin

* This will create a `RealPlayer8' directory in the current path.

3. Change to superuser and move the `RealPlayer8' directory to `/opt/Realplayer8'.

su -
mv Realplayer8 /opt/

4. For firefox, change to the plugin directory and make a symlink to the realplayer plugin lib file.

cd /opt/mozilla-firefox/lib/mozilla-1.6/plugins
ln -s /opt/Realplayer8/rpnp.so

* In the `/opt/mozilla-firefox/lib/mozilla-1.6/plugins' directory should be a symlink that looks like this:

rpnp.so -> /opt/RealPlayer8/rpnp.so

Enjoy all Real Media content over the web...

Re: Something to play Real Audio files? (.ra)

Skoal I got RealPlayer8 to work, thanks!

It did not install in to my current directory, it installed in to /usr/local/RealPlayer8, but that was easy to work around.

thx!

Sorry about that (if there was any confusion about the path).  I haven't installed the RealPlayer8 binary in quite some time, and I wrote those instructions mostly from memory.  I've gone through several distributions over the last couple of years but always kept an `/opt' partition separate from my root partitions.  That way, I keep all my pre-built binary applications (especially commercial ones like Netscape, RealPlayer, Games, etc.) on `/opt' so I don't have to re-install them when I change distributions.

I assume the installer must default to `/usr/local/RealPlayer8' and I must have changed it to `/opt/Realplayer8'.  I guess the installer doesn't unpack it's files in the current working directory then.  I'm glad you got it to work, and thanks for the reply.  It may clear up any confusion someone else might have while reading those instructions.

Hi,

I'm unable to play streaming Real video with the latest Mplayer/mplayer-plugin/codecs pkgs.

Anybody else have trouble with this video(?):

With mozilla-firefox, I get:

This page contains information of a type (audio/x-pn-realaudio-plugin) that can only be viewed with the appropriate Plug-in.

I think what that means is that you need the Real Player plug-in because the browser doesn't recognize the MIME type without the plug-in.  It's not a problem of missing codecs.  I don't know if there is a way to get your browser to understand the MIME type without the plug-in or not.

Searching Google/linux for "x-pn-realaudio-plugin" seems to indicate that the recommended way of fixing this problem is to install and configure the Real Player plug-in.

Re: Something to play Real Audio files? (.ra)

You can play real with mplayer.

Kaffeine also works, you need to install the win32-codecs too, then point to the location (/usr/lib/win32) in the xine Engine Parameters under codecs.  There is a plugin that goes into the firefox/mozilla plugin dir, but I find it is hit and miss for this to work by clicking on a link in firefox.  you can cut and paste and it works, or use konqueror and drag and drop.

I have desktop icons for the ra sites I regularly use, just put as the program to execute 'kaffeine <url>'.

Turn off the image rendering and you can close the window and just have the little bean in the lower left of the taskbar when listening to audio streams.

It works great here. It took me to some "catwoman" movie preview.  All the clips loaded up in a realplayer plugin window with no problems.

I'm using firefox 0.8.  You don't need mplayer plugin to view it, just the realplayer plugin binary I posted a while back in this same thread.

Re: Something to play Real Audio files? (.ra)

Its strange that nobody mentioned xine, xine plays RealAudio/Video, the stranger is that Arch's mplayer package doesn't, and consequently  the mplayer-plugin doesn't too.

Xine plays them fine and so does gxine, it also comes with a plugin which in my case overtakes mplayer-plugin when it comes to online RealAudio/Video.

The thing is that the codecs are there, xine uses them fine, so is it compiling options needed to be set to make mplayer play .rm/ram?
