Video Card - Upgrade

I'm planning on replacing my computer's video card (GeForce 8500 GT) for a better one, and I have a few questions:

1) How well do the cards above the GeForce 8500 GT work with Linux?
2) How well do the cards in the GeForce 9000 series work with Linux?
3) Are there any special steps I need to take once the new card has been installed?

Re: Video Card - Upgrade

The drivers you've already installed for your current nvidia card should work fine with the new one.  The new one should be detected at boot and the only thing I can think of that you might need to change would be any resolution settings, if you should need something different.

Edit: I should add that some have reported a few problems with nvidia and the new kernel, but it's working fine for me.

Re: Video Card - Upgrade

8800GT works just fine for me. Upgraded from a 7800GT and didn't have to do a thing. The latest nvidia driver are suposed to support all the cards in the 9 serie too, but expect bugs since it's "brand new"

The 9600GT looks really interesting in the midrange.

Re: Video Card - Upgrade

I have an 8800GS under a completely up-to-date (just -Syu'ed) system, and it runs fine. The nvidia module should take care of itself on bootup.

Re: Video Card - Upgrade

I would boot to init 3 and run nvidia-xconfig, it may or may not change any actual settings from what you have but it should at least update the device name.
