hey,
i haven't used arch on my desktop for a little bit now... tried to login earlier today via grub and after entering my username/pw, the screen went black, then went back to the grub login screen... if i tried entering the wrong pw, it would simply say "invalid password"... i figured it must be because i haven't updated arch, so i entered via root, which worked perfectly, updated arch (1.5GB of installations...) and rebooted... still get the same black screen + reload!
thanks for any help!

I've had this problem before, maybe the X server isn't working fine, try by using the next commands (as root in a VC):
rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf
pacman -S hwd
hwd -xa
startx
If that doesn't works, try again only the first and last commands.
If still no luck, maybe it's not your X server...

Hey,
I remember it took me a long time to setup my xorg... anyway I tried that, neither of them worked... resulting in some errors. I replaced the "new" xorg.conf with my old one which i know worked earlier, and when I try running it, it gives
xinit: Resource temporarily unavailable (errno 11): unable to connect to X server
xinit: No such process (errno 3): Server error.
When i run startx via console, it shows the Nvidia logo across the screen, then it goes black... Any other ideas?
thanks.

It would be useful for you to post a more complete log, let me show you a tip:
Install GPM (General Purpose Mouse) which is a mouse for the VC:
pacman -S gpm
Then install links browser (also for VC):
pacman -S links
That way you can have a web browser and mouse. Now run both:
/etc/rc.d/gpm start && links
Now in a new VC try to execute startx and copy/paste the output here.

NOTE: Have you tried to reinstall nVidia Module? What about using the VESA controller?

hey...
i installed links and ran gpm like you recommended... however the mouse speed is too fast to use, and i'm too much of a noob to access the logs and copy and paste it via links!
anyway i won't go through vesa at all because i had everything configured (twinview and stuff) for my setup... it's really weird because from grub, i can login using root and the Xserver starts up perfectly... it just won't start up using my normal username/pw!
anyway i think my problem may lie in my .xinitrc file:
/home/alex/.xinitrc: line 1: exec: startkde: not found
that's all i have in that file and it used to work... any tips?
sorry for the lack of log posting... i can try more if the above is not enough! i'm a big noob these days hehe.
NEW ERROR: I just tried running startx from console, and it gives me this:
xauth: error in locking authority file /home/alex/.Xauthority

You must configure it correctly, it seems to me that you didn't... check this out:
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gpm.xml
Have you tried to errase your .xinitrc file? Just to make sure it's not something to with X, most NOT likely.

alright so i think i fixed it... it wasn't anything wrong with my Xserver at all... I think I probably fixed my original problem by installing the 1.5 gigs of required software (cuz i didn't use arch for a little while) but by doing that, i filled up my hard drive (sda3) so i didn't have enough temporary resources to run my xserver! so i deleted a bunch of stuff and now i'm good to go. thanks for the help!

Because of the upgrade he did (1.5GB) his / was full. KDE then complained /tmp was not writable.
Maybe something he did after the upgrade corrected the first problem, but because there was no room left on the drive, KDE refused to launch.
Alex: Can you add "Solved" in your title? Welcome to arch by the way

P.S. Grub doesn't have user login, you were probably talking about gdm or kdm.
