Lots-O-Lag

Hey all,

I get lots of lag when I try to resize simple GTK windows (and any other windows) when I check on the option to show content while resizing. Right now, I disabled the option to show content while dragging/resizing. I'm using XFCE. My CPU is an Athlon X2 4400+, 2 GB RAM, nVidia 8800GT graphics card with the latest drivers. I should NOT be having this issue. Is there a way to resolve it?

Do you have localhost computer name etc right in your /etc/rc.conf ?

I don't remember if there is a solution but i've read somewhere, on here or LQ,  it has to do with the content just not being able to keep up with the frame due to the way that its drawn or something. try turning on composting and see if that makes a difference (shot in the dark). Hopefully someone has more info on this I dont' think its a hosts issue.

Thanks guys. It's not a hosts issue. The problem is, there's lag (low frames per second sort of lag) when I drag to resize a very simple window.

Edit: enabling compositing has no effect.

I checked my hosts and tried xfce and compiz-fusion compositing. Still no change. This is really sad. It shouldn't be happening.

Update: Switching to the "human" engine (from Ubuntulooks) makes quite a bit of improvement, however, the results are still very disappointing considering the ram, cpu and graphics card I have. I don't remember having this problem on Ubuntu, so it's probably some weird configuration issue. Another thing, KDEmod does not have this issue. I will try openbox now.

Update: Openbox improves the condition a tad bit more, but again, still very very disappointing. Sad thing is, this problem does not exist on winbloze AT ALL.

u can read it, but to point out a few things contained within.

A lot of people have that problem, u sir don't seem to be the only on and its a two yo bug.

Also, some people said to stay away from the ubuntulooks themes since they are 'heavy'

Since this is a GTK problem, I doubt u will get any help from here.

The problem is the latest nVidia drivers.  While 3D performance seems unaffected, 2D performance is down the drain.  I'm using the 169 driver and everything's a-okay.

Yes I can confirm that, this is a nvidia issue and not a GTK, since I use the same settings on different systems, one powered by ATI (works ok) and one powered by nvidia (Lag).
As far as I know this is also officially confirmed by nvidia as well.

How do I get the 169 drivers for Arch Linux? The Ubuntulooks theme works fine, to be honest.

they are listed as 169 already, u probably need the previous release of 169 driver version. If u don't delete your pacman cache, try this...

pacman -U /var/cache/pacman/pkg/nvidia-*.pkg.tar.gz

using the nvidia package that is the correct one u want. ls /var/cache/pacman/pkg | grep nvidia

Or install the beta drivers from the AUR, I am using nvdia beta drivers and I don't have any issues.

I am using the beta drivers right now. Very little improvement. What is the exact name of the old drivers that you guys are using?

Update: Scrolling some websites is also VERY laggy. This is very very disappointing.

So you're pretty sure it's a driver issue right? I'm going to file a bug report with nVidia on this one. This is ridiculous. A $200 card that doesn't have proper drivers.

Linux is an afterthought for most companies. Nothing new.
