can't configure printer

OK, i give

been trying to configure a printer for a week, starting to feel really silly and a bit irritated........printer install should=not brain surgery......

got cups up and running,
tried /usr/sbin/lpadmin -p DeskJet -E -v parallell:/dev/lpl -m deskjet.ppd
and got failed-client-error-not possible

kde config utility won't allow parallel as a choice (empty uri error)

tried the [printer as usb also (it'll be either...)
all seems to go well but will never print test page..
Have read cups docs, googled til i'm blue in the face, checked the parallel
port kernel module to make sure it exists...

Could anyone suggest what it is that I'm overlooking.  I only know enough about linux to be sure that this is something that I did wrong or overlooked....

help!?!?!

Re: can't configure printer

try loading the following modules in rc.conf (if you use the standard arch kernel):
parport parport_pc lp (for parallel)
usblp (for usb printers)
now you should be able to get access to parallel port/usb port
have a look at this:

Re: can't configure printer

I have sometimes had problems with the location of the printer in /dev - if I remember right cups is looking for /dev/usblp0 but the printer is in /dev/usb/lp0, so I created a symlink.

Re: can't configure printer

you needn't do this
after loading the modules you have to restart cups
then it shows you the printer directly not usblp0 anymore
it looks like this:
usb://EPSON/Stylus%20COLOR%20880

Re: can't configure printer

Yay!  Thanks all!

My PC has found my printer!!

....only one small problem...

regardless of what I try to print(test page, document, image....)the printer pulls the paper through-the first page conainting the text  "%!PS-
Adobe-1.0, %Bounding box: 0 0 612 791, %%Creator: KEDit,%%Title: (New Document"  followed by 13 pages of blank....maybe more but i let the printer run out of paper...

But definitely some progress...

Any thoughts on the now renegade printer would be greatly appreciated.

Re: can't configure printer

Looks like you have the wrong print driver selected for your printer. It's outputting in Postscript (erm... that is postscript, isn't it) format and your printer doesn't seem to understand postscript.

Install the gimp-print and ghostview packages, try selecting a different driver in cups afterwards.

Re: can't configure printer

That should do it!  I already had gimp-print, went and got gv package,
and that seemed to make the printer do the happy dance.

Thanks a bunch for that one!  I would never come up with that on my own,
well maybe at some point, but you saved me lots more trouble.
