After a full system upgrade of about 500mb, I now get this error when Gnome is started. Also, im kinda new to this...
"There was an error starting the GNOME Settings Daemon.
Some things, such as themes, sounds, or background settings may not work correctly.
The last error message was:
The name org.gnome.SettingsDaemon was not provided by any .service files
GNOME will still try to restart the Settings Daemon next time you log in."
The things is, my background and other desktop stuff is still in their place. But my keyboard has gone back to its default setting and the drivers for my wireless isnt getting loaded. I also have problems playing music with Amarok.
After the full upgrade of my system I installed compiz-fusion and AWM, but they arent started when i boot. Could they be a problem?
I looked at some issues with similar error messages, where they downgraded the gnome-settings-tools, how do I do that?

uhm.. since you upgrade from gnome 2.20 to gnome 2.22 this may have broken something...
I've two ides:
1) try to see if it's a "configuration files error" creating a new user (I know I suggest this too often..)
2) I found this:
http://www.archlinux.it/forum/viewtopic.php?id=202 (I know it's in italian and I'm sorry)
he practically says that everything solved installed control-center...
giving this a try doesn't cost nothing..
I hope this helps... bye
Offline
I got the same error when I logged in with the new user..
And gnome control center was already installed, so I reinstalled it, but that didnt seem to do anything either. Using gnome-control-center-2.22.1-1
Got my wireless working though, seems like there were two drivers installed because one was implemented in the new kernel.
I'm kinda lost here so more suggestions are more than welcome
Could there be any difficulties because I installed compiz-fusion? I toyed a little with it but set the window manager back to metacity afterwards..Compiz won't start from the applications menu either, I have to run fusion-icon from a terminal window to get it started..

no, simply because it's installed (and not started) shouldn't give you any problem..
can you look how many .pacnew files are present in your system and if some of them is "gnome related" ?
locate .pacnew
and look at the files searched in the error string
locate .service
I don't have gnome installed anymore but it is possible that these information may help us (or someone else ) to find the problem..
bye
Offline
Ok, and thanks for all the help so far
locate .pacnew
/etc/fstab.pacnew
/etc/group.pacnew
/etc/ld.so.conf.pacnew
/etc/logrotate.conf.pacnew
/etc/mkinitcpio.conf.pacnew
/etc/nanorc.pacnew
/etc/profile.pacnew
/etc/rc.conf.pacnew
locate .service
/etc/avahi/services/sftp-ssh.service
/etc/avahi/services/ssh.service
/home/xxxx/Desktop/Downloads/wpa_supplicant-0.5.10/dbus-wpa_supplicant.service
/usr/share/dbus-1/services/dhcdbd.service
/usr/share/dbus-1/services/gnome-keyring.service
/usr/share/dbus-1/services/gnome-power-manager.service
/usr/share/dbus-1/services/gnome-vfs-daemon.service
/usr/share/dbus-1/services/gvfs-daemon.service
/usr/share/dbus-1/services/org.freedesktop.Notifications.service
/usr/share/dbus-1/services/org.gnome.Epiphany.service
/usr/share/dbus-1/services/org.gnome.Tomboy.service
/usr/share/dbus-1/services/org.gnome.keyring.service
/usr/share/dbus-1/services/org.gnome.seahorse.service
/usr/share/man/man5/avahi.service.5.gz
Hm, none located in .pacnew seem to be related to Gnome. But there's a few in .service. I don't really know what this means so...:D
Fixed everything else now, so it seems like the only thing this error is affecting is that i can't change the keyboard language. I can access System -> Appearance and change the theme, and System-> Keyboard, but I get this error:
Unable to start the settings manager 'gnome-settings-daemon'.
Without the GNOME settings manager running, some preferences may not take effect. This could indicate a problem with Bonobo, or a non-GNOME (e.g. KDE) settings manager may already be active and conflicting with the GNOME settings manager.
Thanks again!

well, it's not related with your issue but you can change the keyboard layout from xorg...
this is my keyboard section:
Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Keyboard0"
Driver "keyboard"
Option "CoreKeyboard"
Option "XkbRules" "xorg"
Option "XkbModel" "pc105"
Option "XkbLayout" "it"
EndSection
modifing the XkbLayout (and probably resetting the gnome-keyboard setting too, I don't have absolutely an idea of where it stores that in
I looked a little for your help and I found:
http://www.nabble.com/GNOME-2.22-has-be … 45739.html
Do you have sysutils/gnome-settings-daemon installed? If you do, then do
you have /usr/local/share/dbus-1/services/org.gnome.SettingsDaemon.service
? If yes, then do your org.gnome.SettingsDaemon.service looks like this
below?
=============================
[D-BUS Service]
Name=org.gnome.SettingsDaemon
Exec=/usr/local/libexec/gnome-settings-daemon
=============================
If you don't have sysutils/gnome-settings-daemon installed, then install
it by manual. The Mk/bsd.gnome.mk was broke by remove two lines by
accident and marcus has committed a fix recently.
Cheers,
Mezz
you need that .service file..
try removing and reinstalling the gnome-setting-daemon if it reinstall it... (this is very windows like )
or try to modify as written on that list...
tell us if it worked and good luck

By some coincidence I noticed that there was a new enty in the Applications menu called "Other". Here a list of about, 50 someting programs were. And i found a two keyboard config programs. The funny thing is that most of the programs are of some KDE Control-Module. When I changed the keyboard layout there, It worked. So im guessing that is the problem. I don't know how these programs got there, but it has to be from the upgrade..
Offline
this is strange.. there are no KDE programs in the pacman log you posted... (look at the log file for previous updates/install for more infos.. try to search one of that apps)
imho the problem is that missed file.. have you read that thread quote ?
