Warped graphics for KDE/Gnome

I have Arch working nicely on my desktop computer and would like to have it on my laptop as well.

I've done the baseline X test and it works fine. However, after installing and trying to run either KDE or Gnome, text and icons are either not there, or unrecognizably warped. You can still use the DE, and it seems to work fine -- except that you can't read anything. Check the screenshots:

I've tried both ways in the guide to generate an xorg.conf file, as well as not using one at all, and the problem is the same all the time: xterm works, but not KDE/Gnome.

Anyone know how to solve this?

*bump*

Nobody? I guess I might have to give up hope for Arch on this laptop, then.

Re: Warped graphics for KDE/Gnome

Before you give up entirely, maybe some more info might help like what is your graphics card and what does your xorg.conf look like??

Alot of folks have been having different troubles with both Nvidia and ATI these days it seems.  Have you tried just a generic vesa driver in xorg??
