This has to be among one of the most interesting things to ever happen to me while using linux. I use an hdtv monitor for my screen and have never been able to get the full 1360x768 resolution. that never bothered me too much and decided to use 1280x800 with some crafty screen readjustments and an invisible panel. Well, as I was booting up this morning, my monitor wouldn't turn on, which is a common problem for me. The solution is rather simple, I unplug it and restart X. After restarting X, I noticed that my screen resolution was weird and checked the available resolutions and to my surprise I have about 8 new resolution settings to choose from. I am now running 1280x768 and it looks beautiful. I am wondering however if anyone has any idea what might have caused this change. I have not changed my Xorg.conf and as far as I know, there was no update to the open source ATI driver. Thank you very much for your help and ideas!

I figured that this might be too good to be true, so i decided to try restarting X again and then nautilus crashed. i restarted the computer and all the new resolutions were lost. i tried restarting X after the restart and still nothing. really quite strange. i wish i would have gotten the nautilus error message but was something about it not being able to start and suggesting that i should restart the computer.
Edit:
I would like to know how and where to edit my xorg.conf to make this 1280x768 or if possible 1360x768 resolution possible. Thanks for your help and analysis again!

IIRC, you need to look at the Monitor section of xorg.conf, in particular the modelines bit. Man xorg.conf will probably tell you more, I'm not sure about the details.

thank you Jack! the wiki has proved to be an invaluable source. the ATI and xorg pages are great and it looks as though ill be able to put them to good use. as soon as i have a fix, ill mark this thread solved. thanks again!

don't forget to tell us how you fix it also!

i think that i can mark this solved. this is huge. i have read time and time again that 1366x768 resolution cannot be achieved with an ati card, however, i did it, and here is how:

I found a post over at ubuntu where someone cleverly decided to just add all possible resolutions to their xorg and it worked for them, as well as me. the only down side is that my tv is registering my resolution at 1024x768 instead of 1366x768. i am tempted to reduce the 1366 to 1360 and see if that will clear anything up. however, this is solved. thank you to that post that i can no longer find and i hope that this helps the brothers with hdtvs!
EDIT:
Reducing down to 1360 didnt do anything but give me a blue screen. but nevertheless solved!
