I wasn't sure where to put this, the situation is a bit grim though...espiecialyl since I cannot startx.
Here's the story.
I was busy attempting to wine this old Encarta 2000 CD, and install it, it crashes.
I then update using Pacman -Syu, and it installs the new glibc, strangely, it installs a bit slower then usual.
So I edit my .xinitrc to go to gnome-session after I log out of KDE.
It just so happens that after I type startx, my screen goes black and then shows up the dead pixel, which I can tell the monitor is displaying something, and it doesn't seem to load X for a couple of minutes. So I kill X, doesn't work. I then Press Alt F4, which doesn't turn up anything. But at an angle, I can see the virtual console.
I replicate this about severel times by using KDE, and it still doesn't work. I tried fluxbox, and the other Window Managers I had.
Yes, there was output after I go to the virtual consoles, but that was only because I exited into a new virtual console, if you want me to make sure, I'll write it down and post it.
On another topic earlier, which has glibc break pacman, I downloaded the newer, but it doesn't seem to work on the extras, but that's another story.
Anyway, anyone have any ideas? I miss KDE/GNOME!

hmmm.... i had to rebuild pacman (2.8.2-2) was not out yet. then i had to rebuild xorg.
i also reinstalled my nvidia drivers though i don't know if that was necessary.
EDIT: so you know it takes twice as long for my box to boot now after this upgrade.

It takes twice as long to boot the kernel or to boot a desktop enviroment/the X server?

I just had the same problem. I was able to get X to start [ with nvidia]
by commenting out GLX in /etc/X11/XF86config
# Load "glx"

Just booting. Starting X takes longer too but not as long as a full boot does..
It is not a big deal though as I don't boot that much.

Thanks DK! I got Linux working, I couldn't stand using Windows as a regular desktop for a day.
And I can't sleep with my computer on, as it is a gaming computer, and the CPU fan sounds like a vacuum.

Now my only gripe is I can't open OpenGL based applications, grrr...why does this always happen to me!!!

Well, now that you've disabled opengl, that sort of makes sense...
Try recompiling the nvidia drivers.

Thanks Xentac for the real fix. Recompiling nvidia.
I did it the sissy way pacman -S nvidia

Erm I've had the same error, I think.
Upgraded glibc last night, turned off me comp, and now X and Pacman are screwed...??
Pacman just gives errors
getservbyname: no such file or direectory
so I can't reinstall Nvidia etc atm. If I do startx, I lost Terminal 7, and all the others go really faint and I can't see what I'm doing.
Any ideas? Kinda desperate, my box is dead atm

# Load "glx"
fix for a while
What to do now?
Offline
Well......
You need to recompile nvidia drivers...(if using them)
Then remove uncomment Load "glx"
Not sure about xorg system is running again now thanks to Knoppix.....

I reinstalled it last night, seems to work, I install my drivers the old fashioned way. I tried out Tux Racer and it works just like usual.

just for me to make sure i understand:
after the glibc update, nvidia and pacman were broken - right?
(i had to rebuild pacman, but with xorg i had no issues, but i dont use nvidia but radeon)

Well with me pacman ask to update itself before continuing. So I had
no problems with pacman. After that the glibc update broke nvidia.

pacman is statically linked so it needed to be recompiled with the glibc in use. if not it does not werk

another reason to have glibc 2.3.3 in something other than CURRENT

Off to using Peanut and Slackware, no hard feelings but I need my CD to burn, PDA and scanner to connect and arch won't do it.
