Hi,
somehow I've managed to make the standard action for opening the home folder, desktop and other volumes from the Gnome Panel 'Places' tab, to open with Totem. Pretty annoying. It's only from that tab as well, opening them from the desktop icons or other shortcuts works as it should. I've tried reinstalling Nautilus, uninstalling Totem and some other stuff I could think of, but nothing works.
Does anyone know how to fix this?
Thanks in advance.

This is an easy one to fix. Just a little hidden: You will need to open nautilus to the parent directory of the offending folder. Then right click on the offending folder then click <properties> you should see an <open with> tab click it and select <open folder>. all done!
hope it helps.

I'm having the same problem as the original poster, any entry from the 'Places' menu opens in Totem. I went to permissions, Totem was selected when I looked at my home folder, so I selected Open Folder, removed Totem and XMMS entries, but they still open with Totem. Any other ideas?
More info.. home is on another hard drive, from past ubuntu install. trying to merge it in has caused some problems apparently.
did some more searching, found a fix. I hope it lasts. Add these two lines:
inode/directory=nautilus-folder-handler.desktop
x-directory/normal=nautilus-folder-handler.desktop
to ~/.local/share/applications/defaults.list
