Don't know if this is an option, but it would be nice if I could replace the plain blue background in the xdm-archlinux login screen with my desktop's current background, so that the transition from login to desktop is seamless.
Does anyone know how to do this, or if it's even possible?

It's actually prettty easy to do this, I beleive. If you edit /etc/X11/xdm/archlinux/Xsetup and add some background setting program after
xsetroot -solid "#223377" -cursor_name left_ptr
it should change the background for you
EDIT: Although, whether this will look seamless depends on which WM you are using. If you use a minimalistic wm that uses the root window as a background (which you probably do if you're using xdm) it'll look seamless. If you use gnome or kde, or some other wm that sets it's own background, your probably going to notice it.

But which background setting program? Would you please give me an example of the "Xsetup"?

Oh, I've found it. It must be xv or qiv, isn't it?
