Installation woes with 2008-04-RC & 2008-03

Well, here goes.

Firstly, I installed 2007-08.  I assumed this was the most recent, as it was on the main page and all.  Install went fine except for the network card, which I eventually fixed by grabbing new drivers (r8168).  I tried to install some basic packages and update with pacman, but this turned out to be a disaster, leading me onto 2008-04-RC.

Burnt 2008-04-RC, inserted the disc, and found that it stuck on Udev (can't remember exactly what, but it's that line relating to Udev on boot).  Waited ample time and tried multiple times, but it just wouldn't have it.  I went to try 2008-03.

I could get to the installer with 2008-03.  Trouble is, settings were being saved in <temp dir>/etc/.  As such, the files were empty and it also turned out to be a disaster.

I'd really love to install 2008-04-RC (by the way, does this include r8168 drivers?  r8169 didn't do it for me), but I've been at this all day with no success.  I'm very close to going over to Gentoo, despite remembering how much I loved Arch.

Please, please, could someone help me?

Thanks.

Re: Installation woes with 2008-04-RC & 2008-03

Were you doing an FTP or installing packages from the CD?  I just recently reinstalled Arch using 2007.08-2, I was installing from FTP and I was having the same problem with the files being empty.  I tried it at least 4 times.  Then just decided to install from the CD, and everything worked fine.

Oh!  Well I did install from CD on 2007.08-2 (I noticed the error in my versions numbers :-)) and I didn't receive that problem.  Only tried FTP install with 2008.03, so I'll definitely give that a shot when I have the chance!

Thanks.

Re: Installation woes with 2008-04-RC & 2008-03

OK, just tried 2008.03 and I was unable to compile the r8168 drivers on it.  Any clues as to why this might be?  I couldn't save a log, it got cut short to the following:

make -C src/ clean
make[1]: Entering directory `/home/jamie/bla/r8168-8.006.00/src'
rm -rf *.o *.ko *~ core* .dep* .*.d .*.cmd *.mod.c *.a *.s .*.flags .tmp_versions Module.symvers Modules.symvers rset
make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/jamie/bla/r8168-8.006.00/src'
make -C src/ modules
make[1]: Entering directory `/home/jamie/bla/r8168-8.006.00/src'
make -C /lib/modules/2.6.24-ARCH/build SUBDIRS=/home/jamie/bla/r8168-8.006.00/src modules
make[2]: Entering directory `/usr/src/linux-2.6.24-ARCH'
  CC [M] /home/jamie/bla/r8168-8.006.00/src/r8168_n.o
make[2]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/linux-2.6.24-ARCH'
make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/jamie/bla/r8168-8.006.00/src'

The errors came afterwards.

Re: Installation woes with 2008-04-RC & 2008-03

Post the error message (That's the interesting part). I'm having problems with r8169 on 2008-03 and 2008-04. I get a kernel segfault on inserting the module when booting the install disc with the network port enabled and I too wasn't successful with compiling the driver (I don't have the error message at hand).
