Xorg freezing and BusID quirks

I'm currently using Catalyst, which actually is working for me a lot better than the open source drivers. My card is an ATI All-in-Wonder 9600 and it's AGP.

The first time I ran X -config, it actually worked to my surprise! But, without changing anything, the second time I got a very familiar dead screen (my monitor's power light blinks as if it isn't connected to anything). A couple of times, I could get the pointer to show if I moved the mouse around as the config was coming up. One time THAT didn't work, but it came up when I hit num lock... Since then, I'm lucky if I can even exit back to the command line.

Logically, none of this makes any sense. The main error I've always gotten (even when the first run succeeded) is (WW) fglrx: No matching Device section for instance (BusID PCI:1:0:1) found. After looking around on google, I've tried using various "solutions" that people have posted.

I think it might have something to do with AGP, because of this line in ATI - ArchWiki:

System Freezes/Hard locks

    * To prevent system lockups, try adding the following lines to your fglrx "Device" section in xorg.conf

   Option "UseInternalAGPGART"         "no"
   Option "KernelModuleParm"           "agplock=0" # AGP locked user pages: disabled

Note: Neither option is necessary anymore since 8.24.18 because ATI has removed the internal AGP GART support from the driver.

I tried using it anyway, but it didn't do anything as far as I can see.

If you can still get into a CLI environment, I'd give the open source ATI drivers a shot - as a last ditch thing.
Worst comes to worst, you'd have to use the Arch CD, mount and chroot into your installation and then muck around.

edit: oh and are you supposed to have duplicate (as in title) sections in the xorg conf? weird, i only have one for each (screen, devicc etc.)...

I wondered about the multiple device sections, but that's how ATI generated them. Even when I was using open source drivers, xorg -configure has always given me many copies of Screen like above. I've seen it in others' xorg.conf files as well, but I don't really know how Xorg picks what to run. I'll try weeding the unnecessary settings out and see what happens.

Okay, this is just weird. I cleaned up my xorg.conf, and ran X -config. After hitting a button on the keyboard, everything comes up perfectly. Without changing anything, I run it again. This time, the X cursor comes up looking like an hour glass with a dot on each side. Once again, without altering anything, the third run crashes and I have to manually turn off my computer.

I can't even get it running with vesa. Ah well, I'm still really green with Linux. I just need to keep searching.

Make a backup of your xorg.conf, and try consolidating all of your duplicate sections.

Oh and tell me, how much do you rely on acpi? My computer had shutdown and X issues until I uninstalled acpi and acpid, so you might want to look into that! If you look at your error file, you will find;

(WW) Open ACPI failed (/var/run/acpid.socket)

@vsk: Thank you for pointing out acpi! After taking a peek with Linux Reader it appears that I don't have acpi and ati is trying to use it. Maybe installing acpi and acpid will be helpful. smile
