I am trying to figure out what ethernet port I've got... lspci -nn yields...
00:0a.0 Ethernet controller [0200]: nVidia Corporation Unknown device [10de:054c] (rev a2)
Can anyone help me?

Haha; I am dual-booting windows and linux. it works fine on linux but I am trying to find a driver for windows. Is there a place I can look up 10de:054c to find out the exact type?

Install the nvida nforce drivers for whatever motherboard you have .

Yes; I've seen the drivers list on the hp site, but there is no ethernet driver available for 32-bit vista. That's why I am trying to use linux to find out the exact ethernet chip I've got. Any ideas?

there's also a chance that
update-pciids
(as root I think)
might get you a name instead of "unknown device".

And as someone else mentioned, there might be updated drivers on the nvidia website. Look for your chipset there, nforce
