Hi traster.
I'm seeing exactly the same issue. I just upgraded to pacman 2.8.3-1 and when I restarted KDE after a shutdown and reboot, I experienced exactly the same behavior.
I'll look to see if I can fix this or find suggestions in other forums here.

Win

Hi traster.
I just downgraded to libpng to version 1.2.5-2.
I was able to find the package:
libpng-1.2.5-2.pkg.tar.gz
at the following site:
http://archlinux.antesis.org/0.7/os/i686/
After downloading this file, as root (or using sudo), run:
pacman -U libpng-1.2.5-2.pkg.tar.gz
Relogin using KDE and all should be right with your graphical world.
Please let me know if this works for you (or not).

Hi traster.
First: reply 'n' to the question about upgrading to libpng:
Targets: libpng-1.2.6rc1-1
Proceed with upgrade? [Y/n] n
Second: I searched the Arch Linux Forums for problems with KSplash and KDE and I ran across some references to the qt and libpng libraries. I remembered that I had recently upgraded the libpng library (after upgrading pacman); and that this was a likely culprit. There were a few other applications also upgraded, but they were not libraries and therefore lesser candidates:
cvsup
mozilla-firefox
mozilla-thunderbird
k3b
These were my secondary candidates.
So ...
I re-installed the qt library since this was a relatively riskless operation. This had no effect on KDE.
I downgraded to libpng 1.2.5-2 (the previous version) and "upgrade".
Bingo! KDE worked.
Following the KISS principle, I stopped while I was ahead.
This wasn't scientific or especially particularly disciplined, but tracking recent upgrades and a little snooping did the trick.

You can add the following line in your /etc/pacman.conf and it wont upgrade it.
IgnorePkg = libpng

For me upgrading with latest pacman -Syu (downgrade actually) to libpng 1.2.5-3 fixed psi segfaults too (run within xfce4 though).
BTW you should really have better reasons for putting something into ignorepkg. Fixing a package and/or reporting a bug is better option. And thanks to new pacman option we can easly downgrade too.

We can?
/me goes read the manpage...

Well, I mean if package maintainer releases version lower than previously installed, pacman accepts forced downgrade. Not that you can install any version you want :-) At least not with pacman. ABS + arch cvs is helpful when you want to downgrade a package only by yourself.
