I've finally got nvidia-beta driver up and running from AUR (see my post here). I upgraded from 6600GT to 8800GT. Even though, I find compiz to be a bit slow and not very responsive. It's choppy and strange. Wobbly windows works fine, but minimize or resizing a window is a drag, like it's gives me one or two fps. Even my G33 onboard VGA at work (ubuntu) is much more responsive and fast. I was using the latest stabel nvidia driver with my 6600GT btw, but had to go with nvidia-beta from aur with my new card. What can I tune/fix/look for?

Same here with an 8600GT. It just the windows animations that look really bad and the alt-tab switching is jumpy as well.

I'm using an 8800GT and find the speed acceptable -- not great. Make sure you run compiz with loose bindings for best speed with any nvidia card. I really hope the compiz (or nvidia) devs put some effort into getting a high-end card to perform like it should with compiz.

Same problem here. Seems that all 8000 series users are having this issue. Also, resizing windows lags.

You may be right because I have no problems on my 7950GT's in SLI.

For those with 8000 series cards, try this in modprobe.conf:
# options to make nVidia card run at max perf/power when connected to AC
# Use "...=0x2222" for max power all the time
# Use "...=0x3322" for max power when on AC but not batteries
options nvidia NVreg_RegistryDwords="PerfLevelSrc=0x3322"
It helps alot AND helps with switching tabs in Firefox.

That's for powermizer. That doesn't work for me. Also, I'm using a desktop...

I also had this issue and I've got an 8500GT. But messing around with my settings I found that if I went Icon > Compiz Options > Loose Binding that the problem was solved entirely.

Try to add:
# nvidia-xconfig --composite --add-argb-glx-visuals

I got this little handy command on this forum:
nvidia-settings -l -a InitialPixmapPlacement=2 &
Works like a charm.

Try to add:
# nvidia-xconfig --composite --add-argb-glx-visuals
--add-argb-glx-visuals
is enabled by default with the last driver versions, you only need --composite.
