Sluggish GeForce 9600 GT

I've recently upgraded from GeForce 6600 to 9600 GT (accurst be ye, game industry, for forcing HW upgrades) and now my Arch feels sluggish. It's most visible when outputting pages of text in Konsole, but any GUI operation seems to be lagging compared to previous behaviour on 6600. The most annoying part is when video playback stalls for the tiniest moment. I'm using the latest kernel and latest nvidia drivers. Tried fiddling with xorg.conf, but to no avail. Everything works swiftly in Windows (apparently now that I've upgraded, it wants me not to be productive, but to play games).

Anyone experienced similar behaviour?

I also have sluggish behavious on two arch pcs using nviida cards, 8600M GT and 8800GT. glxgears shows good fps in console but the gears don't move.
