apart from that, you can scroll up the console using shift + PageUp
Be yourself, because you are all that you can be

If you switch back and forth through framebuffer vc though you can't do that.
I mean I've never been able to have the buffer back when switching back to a vc.

any way to fix this possibly? I realize this topic is old but ive seen a number of users (including myself) notice this problem when going back to vc1 (via ctrl+alt+f1), and not being able to scroll up through the buffer....

There isn't -- if you look at "vc.c" in the kernel source, you'll see the scrollback buffer is cleared each time a console is switched.
That said, I seem to recall you could hack this by using fbcon -- but this assumes you're running a framebuffer, and it's been ages since I last did this.

If you do all your work in a screen session then you can scroll back using the appropriate keybindings. Screen has it's own buffer.
