Ahoy mateys, I have managed to run into another irritating problem. My sound is just way to low, all the google resaults I've managed to find so far is easily solved because the posted forgot something simple as raising the volume of some controller, but all mine is set to max. In Windows with the same setup I would kill off my ears by putting it all up to max, so I have ruled out bad headphones.
As topic suggests I am using snd-intel-hda, more exact specification from lspci:
00:05.0 Audio device: nVidia Corporation MCP61 High Definition Audio (rev a2)
'amixer' to show my controls (note that they are around 95'ish here though):

uname -a
Linux mmk 2.6.25-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Fri May 16 14:29:57 CEST 2008 x86_64 AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 3800+ AuthenticAMD GNU/Linux
So as you can see I'm using x86_64, but I dont think that has anything to do with it.
Software I used to test with is mplayer and XMMS, both have their volumes cranked up, and I have used the same files as in windows.
Oh, and it seems that I have a whistling / static sound in my headphones while they are plugged in, anyone else experience that? Really irritating, and it shows up even if I mute all the controls.

I use the same ALSA module as you on my Shuttle, and all is fine.
In the past I've had this with some onboard chipsets, and often upgrading to the development version of ALSA has helped -- I can't see that helping you here though.
Does:
amixer -q set 'Capture',0 100%,100% on
Help you any?

Thanks Thomas, I dont understand how changing capture level would effect it but it seems to have increased the sound after running that, to a level where I can blow my eardrums away if I set it to high by misstake.
It seems that the whistling sound is still here though, it only appears when I have something running, MP3 / AVI whatnot, even if I set everything (both everything under playback and capture in alsamixer) to 0 and mute it, it is still there. As soon as I stop mplayer or stop the file in XMMS it stops, pausing it however doesnt effect it so it is still there.

Yes -- that happens a lot with interference, alas.
