I won't go into details but here's the basic situation:
My system is normally connected to a 15" LCD display, but occasionally I need to hook it up to a 22" widescreen display.
What is the best/easiest/most elegant way to do the switching back and forth? Do I need a separate xorg.conf for each 'mode'? is it as simple as switching resolutions with CTRL+ALT+backspace?
thanks for any information.
Note: that I am not talking about a dual head configuation here. The computer is never connected to both at once.

xrandr may be woth to look into. you can change output, resolution etc without restarting X.
Edit: if you only have to switch between two resolutions, hint in the above post will probably be the best way. sorry for confusion.

These are both LCD monitors, I should have mentioned that. So you're saying that it should be pretty much automatic?

Doesn't X autodetect settings only on when it starts?

Xrandr might let him change the resolution without restarting X then.

Yeah I'd prefer not to restart X
Oh and I don't have both monitors yet (one is on its way) so i can't test it out. I posted this thread so I would be prepared and to know what to do.
