Two days ago everything was working fine with my microphone and just now I opened Teamspeak and I'm muted by default - which is TS's way of saying that my mic doesn't work anymore. I have no idea what happened. It's not muted in alsamixer, the hardware itself is plugged in and should work (I get my usual low volume echo through the headset when I am too close to the mic). Any ideas?

Maybe a sound server like esd or artsd is running? You could try to run TS via artsdsp/esddsp or alsa-oss (aoss).

I had the same problem a few months ago.
It's not muted in alsamixer
alsamixer dose not actually show whether the the (capture) mic is muted or not. Luckery I still had kde(mod) installed so was able to unmute it with kmixer.
Edit: for typo.

The only way I've ever been able to use TeamSpeak is to start it with the command aoss /path/to/TeamSpeak. My sound card is an M-Audio Revolution 5.1

The same problem...looks like a really awful bug :-!
I solved it using aoss, which was already mentioned here. After this, the alsa start working properly (I don't need to use aoss any more....)
