mp3 playing

Ok i am having a bit of trouble trying to get my mp3 files to play. I have both banshee and rhthymbox installed, but neither have a usable mp3 codec they can use. I see i have two options:

1) figuire out a way to get gstreamer0.10-fluendo-mp3 installed, as it is not in repos

2) convert all my mp3 to flac or ogg files so i can play them

I am looking for some advice on what to do, i am new to arch but i am more than willing to learn to to make an arch package ( i have made debs in debian and ubuntu before) or the best way to convert a large mass of mp3 files to a format tha banshee or rythmbox supports, with as little audio quality lost in practicality (i am concerned my files are already somewhat compermised). Advice and/or instructions welcome.

Re: mp3 playing

If you're using gstreamer, install gstreamer0.10-mad to enable mp3 playback (pacman -S gstreamer0.10-mad).

Re: mp3 playing

2) u shouldnt convert mp3 to anything.in fact any lossy format to another (lossy or otherwise.
i would ditch anything to do with gtstreamer and install a decent player like audacious

There shouldn't be any reason to learn more editor types than emacs or vi -- mg (1)

Re: mp3 playing

I am just plain stupid or does it take every Arch user over an hour to get banshee to play mp3 files?
Maybe a Wiki would not be bad. gstreamer0.10-base-plugins is a dependency of banshee, but it seems you have to install -mad and -ugly (plus respective plugins) "by hand". Or am I wrong?
