X / KDEmod memory consumption

Hey,

I've got an Arch installation, up for about 10 months.
I got an Ubuntu installation on an old computer, and I've noticed the following:
Typing "free" in the console, with X/KDE working gives me 260 megs occupied ("+/- buffers/cache"), this
with only Firefox running (and the console) - under Arch of course.

Under Ubuntu:
With my old computer, Ubuntu (with X/KDE/Firefox running) takes about 80 (!) megs of ram.
I installed Ubuntu under VirtualBox, and ran it there under Arch, and got about 120 megs of ram occupation, still
half the amount my native Arch (with X/KDE) takes.

Can anyone explain this?
How can I lower memory consumption?
I am using VirtualBox with several OS running quite often, so I need every bit of memory that I can take.

Thanks a lot,
fiod

Hi.

I don't know what the reason is but I noticed the same thing. It might be a problem with KDEmod as GNOME isn't affected (on Arch).

arch(3) adj amused because you think you understand something better than other people ;P

Re: X / KDEmod memory consumption

I got this with my standard apps started

132 Mb only X/KDEmod
171 Mb with X/KDEmod/amarok/kmail/kopete/knetworkmanager
214 Mb if firefox is added

KDEmod version is 3.5.9-3

Re: X / KDEmod memory consumption

HI, guys, pls note in Virtualbox, there should be no more drives loaded, eg, for sound card, LCD monitor, etc.
In normal case, the drivers can consume a lot of rams. For example, I installed Win XP in Virtualbox, it can only takes about 70 M rams. But normally, when I installed it to a computer, the minimum rams was about 160 Megs.

For another question, I have no idea of why arch can take about more rams than Ubuntu. But, could you give the Ubuntu version. For 7.10 & 8.04, it also takes about more megs. It should more than 300M for my computer.
