Sent an email to the one I got it from with a request for the document in a format I can open.

openoffice-base-devel 3.0_dev300_m10-1 from unstable can do it. I'm not sure how well, but I can tell you for a fact that it works on some.

I'm using MS Office 2007.
I haven't found a good Linux solution for that. (OOo3's support for these formats is limited).

I know gmail can view doc, can it also view docx?

Don't use docx and other formats.. And tell other people about why you can't open it and why they should "at least" stick with doc or start using ODF..

Complain to whoever sent it to you. Just say you have a different office version that doesnt open them.
There's also an online converter for docx somewhere, but it didnt work for me...

Won't work for me. I'm a translator and I cannot tell a company that sends me files that I want them in another format: they won't change the format - they will change the translator.

You could install Office 2003 with this pack : http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta … laylang=en with Wine. It might work.

Well; that really sucks.. I can't believe that they're behaving in such a way that they even don't think that noone has to have MS Office products.... You can even sue them just because of this.. Do they support Office 2007 etc. for you ?

I use the openoffice 3.0 thing from unstable as Skottish mentioned a little earlier.
You'll be able to read all the text fine, but the lay-out is mostly wrong. If I need correct formatting & saving it again in .docx I run my virtualbox windows with office 2007 on it.

My girlfriend switched back to doc after she had problems with saving her documents in docx. Why can't other people also see that docx means no good?
Anyway: If one sends a document over the internet, one usually should use PDF, it's name isn't "portable data format" without a reason... It's the only format I know, that is always viewed correctly...

I understand. I too don't like to let my personal preferences get in the way of my income.

Actually i'm fairly sure the Word/Excel/Powerpoint Viewers all work with Wine.
