Huh? Backslashes in web addresses? Are you sure?
A backslash is this: \ check out: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Backslash
Slashes are: /
sample url: http://www.archlinux.org/packages/searc … q=&limit=0
I don't see a single backslash... Only slashes. And anytime you use a language involving tags such as x/html, xml (rss, atom), TeX or even bbcode, you use slashes... The only time I've used a backslash is when I need to use an escape character such as \n, \r, \0 or anything like that.
To me, slashes are a ton more convenient and used in more places than backslashes.

Odd, when I tried doing:
[url=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Backslash]\[/url]
it didn't show up at all....

My mistake, i thought backslash was "/".
In that case:

I just saw a commercial (I can't remember what for) that was "And make sure to visit our website at www.blahblah.com backslash whatever." I thought...yeah, I'll give that a shot, I think I will get a pretty nice error, though.
Edit: I think I should clarify. On the screen they had "www.blahblah.com/whatever," but the narrator said "dubbayoo dubbayoo dubbayoo dot blah blah dot com backslash whatever."

I love how blahblah.com became a link to an actual website.

Pft. It was a ninja advertisement.
Anyway, my favorite excuse is "mac is better" coming from a guy who doesn't even have a Mac (cause of the price), and uses Windows. But it's still used as an excuse not to use Linux.
Madly in love with Arch64, Openbox, DotA, and of course... penguins!

Hmm? I thought Linux was immune to those drm-protected mp3's...

Its mp3s that are immune to drm

No, Linux is immune to Vista, while Vista is not immune to Linux.

1. Not ALL command line. Not like DOS. Better than DOS.
2. When run off the live CD?
3. You can get all you want. The major apps you can't get are those crappy MS ones.

Window is so easy, everything just works. And wtf wine?!?!? Can't they do better, I want to play my games. I'll think I try Vista...
And that's from a friend of mine. His graphic card is overheated to around 80celsius, and the fan to the power-box have stopped. This means he gets errors after a while.
because of this problem he tried Ubuntu, but when the problems occoured again he switched back and now are thinking about Vista.
He doesn't like wine because he wants to play diablo2 in fullscreen and likes to tab out of it, and this doesn't seem to work because of diablos2 stupid resolution.
Considering that wine does a great job trying to support windows-games and programs, i would like to see a similar program in Windows.
Anyhow, the biggest reason he said later, was that it was to accustomed to windows. And i think lots of people are to indoctrinated in their old ways of doing things, that they never take the time to learn new ones. Or for that matter, never consider why some things work in Linux (like package managment, security, etc.) but not Windows (instead of the opposite, that always seem to come down to either games or some other program).

One person told me that there isn't any software available for Linux. That may be true, but considering that 80% of Windows software is JUNK, I think not having as many as Windows is fine by me.

Ah! Yes. Lenux. Didn't people do that in the 90's?
Conversion is a dirty word. I prefer offering a helping hand off addiction. Teaching people how to google a computer issue, so I don't have to sit on the phone. I have given a helping hand to several friends. They are all (more or less) indepedent users, solving their own problems.

Recently a guy (using windows) came to me on IM asking how to convert an mp4 to series of still pngs
I - Try to find ffmpeg and bash for windows. instsall them. open the bash and enter there
for (( i = 0 ; i < 60 ; i += 1 )) ; do ffmpeg -i moomin.mp4 -ss 00:00:$i -vcodec png -vframes 1 -an -f rawvideo -s 320x240 img$i.png
He - is this the complex way of linux doing stuff ? no just exe to download that does that all ????? linux sucks !!!!!!!!111
For him this shows how linux is complex - entering code in bash ? huh ?
For us this shows how linux is simple and usable - you have all the tools like bash and ffmpeg. just connect them the way you need them
This difference in approach is what makes each side hate the other way of doing stuff
This explains also why is there so lot of windows software around. A good deal of it is task specific thing that cannot be used for anything else

The main reasons I have ever heard from people when I try to tell them about linux (and I really only tell people who I think would have a genuine interest in trying it) are that:
1.)you can't play the good games on it. this one confuses me because I am not a gamer, I use my computer for productive ventures, not wasting CGI aliens
2.)The command line seems so old and would take forever to learn! these people have no idea that there are in fact GUI's to help hold your hand through this process. also, most don't realize how much more powerful the command line is than a gui interface. and how much less efficient pushing a mouse around is than just using the keyboard (maybe that's just me)
also, yes, the command line is old, it's also tried and true, and simple. just because GUI's are prettier, doesn't mean they are better!
3.)but how can I run all of my software on it? also these people don't realize that there is a very very large community of open source developers in the world and that there is a FREE equivelent to almost every peice of software out there, example: Open Office, Free. Macrosuck Office home and student $149.99USD.
4.)Linux is UGLY! These people haven't seen what you can do with programs such as Compiz-Fusion. (I don't use it myself, KISS) but even running a lightweight WM like fluxbox is extremely easy to make beuatiful! I've got 2 conky's and a custom theme, and when my window's friends see it, they invariably drool a little.
What it really boils down too is the average human fearing something they don't feel they will ever understand. Most people I know of who bash linux are people who have never even seen/used a box running linux.
also, they are going to have to buy a new computer or upgrade there hardware with every new version of windows and with every resource sucking game that is produced.
I have 2GB of ram, and a 3.2GHz dual-core. my buddy AJ has a similar set up. his machine Idles at 1.2Gb and 25%CPU. my machine, with over 115 processes running right now is at 8%memory and 1%CPU. while I'm pretty sure I can be happy with this machine for the next 5 years or so. he's constantly shopping for upgrades(mostly cooling fans!)
Now, as a disclaimer. I am not bashing windows. (although I disagree with their business practices). I even have a machine running windows!(solely for testing purposes)
We live in a windows world. it's a fact, and something we'll never change in our lifetime. it's just another way to accomplish the same purposes. If a person chooses to conform with the Windows community, let them. it's probably not the type of person who ought to be using Linux anyway . (sorry, I'm kind of an elitest)
but the cream always rises. and that cream is linux.
cheers,
