ALSA: snd-via82xx -> No sound but system gets very slow

Hello!

I'm using the Onboard sound chip on my Fujitsu-Siemens D1607 mainboard. It' A Sigmatel STAC9758/59 Chip and runs with snd_via82xx module (worked with SuSE 9.1 so far, at least stereo-out but no LineIn). Now when i load the module as discribed in the ALSA howto an unmute Master and PCM i still get no sound, but my system gets very slow (applications start ten times slower, loading websites also takes much more time). But snd_via82xx seems to load without errors.
ArchLinux is uptodate and i'm using a custom Kernel 2.6.7 because i need some special settings for my AVM Fritz!Card DSL.

Does anybody have any hint?

I use snd-via82xx on Arch and it works, so do not despair!

Have you tried it as both user and root? Test as root first, to eliminate permission problems. What command are you using to test? aplay? Check dmesg and /var/log/messages for possible errors.

I always test with a CD first to ensure that the speakers are set up and such, as CD doesn't go through the software.

Hmm ... is tried it at root only . Strange is that even CD doesn't work. No sound. Unfortunally this config works perfectly under WindowsXP so speakers should work so far. Realy strange .... this is was amixer says:

Should be ok, but perhaps you guys find something wrong.
in dmesg and /var/log/messages i do not find anything uncommon. Most of the messages are status messages from pppd .

if the module works it should be a permission problem

did you try alsamixer?

Yes i used alsamixer to unmute the channels and bring Volume to 100%.
I don't think this is a permission problem as i tried it as root only and this doesn't work.

Are you using devfs or udev?

try:
cat anyoldfile > /dev/dsp

and see if you get any sound at all.

I'm using the default devfs, as my ArchLinux is at the moment more or less only a baseinstall. Didn't change to udev yet.

I'll try it when i'm back from work.

"cat anyoldfile > /dev/dsp" results in no sound. I saved a new txt-file filled with garbish and used it as "anyoldfile"

EDIT: Could it be a problem of Jack-configuration? Seems like Sound ends somewhere in Nirvana. The same Jack can be configured to work as Line IN , Microphione-IN or Stereo out. I tried every Jack but no one seems to be used as Stereo-out .

Does anybody of you also use a FSC D1607 Mainboard?

Hmmm... could it help when i try to install the newest alsa-driver package? As i'm useing Kernel 2.6.7 this shouldn't be nessessary, but perhaps the alsa-driver package is newer than Kernel 2.6.7 Alsa?
Or isn't it possible to use alsa-driver 1.0.5-3 and Kernel 2.6 at the same time?

PS: Only installed alsa-utils, alsa-lib and alsa-oos yet.

EDIT: or i have to install my old Terratec DMX XFire 1024 soundcard . But then i cannot use Front-jacks of my case for my Headset . Hmm... using Onboardsound under WinXP Home and DXM XFire under Linux ? Is this possible?

The chances are the sound is all configured properly, but your channels are not unmuted properly. Lots of people using different cards have to unmute a special "magic" combination of the channels with funny names to get sound out. I think some of these channels might be for switching output between jacks and such, or disabling/eabling some weird combination...

Hmmm ... seems to get a boring Trail and Error game . So i'll keep trying to get it work.
Meanwhile i have a temporary solution: I installed my old DMX XFire 1024 soundcard (snd-cs46xx module). This works perfectly so at least i have sound under Linux .
