Don't know if I agree with BASE being automagically installed. Arch has always been about choice. There's about 10 packages I normally deselect from installation.
+1 from me

There shouldn't be any reason to learn more editor types than emacs or vi -- mg (1)

It's really not that big of a deal in the grand scheme of things. It hurts no one and you can always pacman -R them. Either way, you're always welcome to file a bug report and vote it up. I mean, I don't see the harm in allowing individual package selection from the category, I just think it's a little silly.

Even though I always install all of base anyway, I am sure this is a slap in the face of many freakazoids who really like to pick stuff...
I mean "every one installs a desktop environment eventually.. just install KDE and Gnome them automatically"

Those are very very different scenarios. The simple fact is that many many many of our base packages don't have deps for things in 'base' simply because we always assume that all of 'base' is installed. You should see what kind of weird things break if you remove 'findutils', for instance.

What about nano and lilo though? They're in base and yet they are completely unnecessary if one uses vi and grub.

There's no point arguing about it here. Vote for the bug: http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/10752
flack 2.0.6: menu-driven BASH script to easily tag FLAC files (AUR)
knock-once 1.2: BASH script to easily create/send one-time sequences for knockd (forum/AUR)
