[SOLVED] OpenOffice not starting

Hope this is an easy fix, when I try to start any part of OpenOffice, nothing happens. From the terminal I get,

[andrew@low ~]$ soffice
no suitable windowing system found, exiting.

I am in gnome with compiz-fusion/emerald. I've tried with metacity to no avail.

I had the same problem under Openbox. I installed libsndfile and it worked. But it seems that the problem can have multiple origins.
